School can be an unhappy place when you are struggling. I am an experienced teacher specializing in students who struggle with academic or attention difficulties. Tell me your needs and I will work to find the best manner in which you CAN learn and maybe even enjoy yourself on the way!
I returned to school as an adult because I found my strengths and knew what I wanted to do in my lifetime: help children find confidence and feel successful in the learning environment!
I ran my own preschool for several years while my own children were young. It's then that I decided that I wanted to formalize my interest and education. I attended Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie and received my Associate's degree. I really enjoyed school and just kept going after entry into the National Honor Society. I moved on to Marist College where I received numerous academic scholarships and earned a Bachelor's degree in elementary education grades N-6, Special Education K-12, and Psychology in 2003. I graduated Summa Cum Laude (the highest of praise award)! In 2008, I earned my master's from University of Michigan Dearborn and graduated with a "Graduate of Distinction" award. I have also obtained my advanced graduate certificate as a Reading Specialist B-6. I LOVE to learn! and I love to share my enthusiasm for learning with children.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have NY certification for students through 6th grade. I graduated summa cum laude. I have taught at many levels, this includes early intervention, preschool special education, grades 2-6 general education and special education. I had my own nursery program for several years until I decided to formalize my education and return to school. I have also taught enrichment classes for elementary grades 2-5. I have worked with students one-on-one, in small groups and in whole class situations. I have been working with children for 18 years in various settings which include home-based, preschool, public school setting, and private school. I enjoy watching them grow and making it fun!
I have attended several Wilson reading method trainings. I used this multi-sensory method of learning language in my self-contained classrooms for students with mild to severe learning abilities. The systematic methods along with the ability to teach to all the senses allow these students to advance in decoding, encoding, comprehension, and fluency. Of course, once they had a little success, along with lots of praise, they were motivated to move onward and upward.
I particularly find the Wilson method of tapping out sounds in order to isolate sounds effective. It eventually leads the student to pull the whole word together. The visual aspect of each letter in a box, paired with the use of tapping fingers for each sound, created a "physical experience" that allowed a much deeper understanding of what it means to read.
I hold a NY state certification in special education grades k-12th. I have my bachelors as well as my masters degree. I graduated with academic distinction in all schools that I attended.
I have been the head teacher in special needs classes for grades 2-6 for almost 6 years. I have taught special education preschool students as well as infants with special needs for over two years. I have had very successful experiences with both the children and their families, who also require education and support.
I am patient, calm, and teach in the manner that the students learns best. I make learning fun and establish a kind, enjoyable, and trusting relationship, therefore I get results!
