Looking to Spread Knowledge
I have always enjoyed being a part of education. Growing up, I loved learning, and I still do today which is why I have continued through graduate school. I hope to one day obtain a PhD, but for now, my JD will do. I started tutoring in High School for elementary and middle schoolers. When I entered college, I continued to tutor in Math, Legal Studies, and Criminal Justice. A lot of my courses in college were English courses because I love literature, writing, and researching. I love tutoring because I like to see each student grow. It is one of the most enlightening moments I experience when I see the light bulb shine bright over a student's head. If you hire me as your child's tutor, I promise that they will gain the confidence to not only do better in school, but find a way to enjoy learning and want to further their education.
I tutor in English (including literature), Math (up to precalculus), History, Criminal Justice, playing the Saxophone/reading music. I have played the Saxophone for 15 years and love to play it. I have been reading music for just as long as well. I will occasionally assign homework and/or give progress quizzes to ensure the student is obtaining the knowledge he/she is trying to learn. Since I started substitute teaching I am familiar with common core. I am a very open person, so the lessons will not be intimidating and I have a very calm demeanor. While correcting any errors in a student's work, I will calmly explain where he/she went wrong and how to fix it.
I have a three hour cancellation policy because I understand what it is like for something to go wrong at the last hour. I understand if there is a time or two when canceling a class very last minute is necessary and I am willing to schedule make-up classes.
I suggest using a location where the student is comfortable while trying to learn, but will not be distracted by his/her surroundings. Math has been one of my favorite subjects since I was a child. To help another person understand how the numbers work and how vast the subject of math is, opens up a child's mind to the possibility of more.
I excelled at reading all throughout elementary school and enjoy teaching others to read, regardless of age. I still read at least one book a day. I understand that reading can be very difficult for some people, especially if they are only interested in certain subjects. Encouraging reading in other subjects helps open a child's mind to how far his/her imagination can go.
In elementary school I tutored other elementary school students. I enjoyed all elementary subjects and enjoyed quizzes and tests. In sixth grade, had I not been in the hospital for asthma, I would have participated in the spelling bee.
I am a substitute teacher during the school day in the Port Jervis City School District. I spend most of my days at either the high school or elementary schools. I prefer elementary school because I am able to teach actual lessons throughout the day for the students. When I am in the Middle or High Schools I am given specific items for each different class of students, most of the time it isn't something I teach, but am there if a student needs help. I am very familiar with Common Core and therefore understand its principles.
I have played the saxophone since I was eight years old and have read music just as long. I played volleyball for two years on a team, and four years in gym competitively against other students. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you succeed in all of your achievements!
