About Patrick

Hello, my name is Patrick. Upon returning to the United States after spending a year abroad teaching English to children of all ages in South Korea, I have noticed there is just as much of a need for my skills at home. It is my most humble desire that you select me as your - or your child's - tutor for improving skills in writing, grammar and conversation in a relaxed, hands-on environment. I offer services in proofreading writing (essays, school papers, letters, etc.) over the internet, or conversational practice face-to-face or via Skype. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon! Hello, my name is Patrick. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I spent 15 months in Korea helping students bolster this skill.

Grammar

Many of the assignments I would offer students, even at the Kindergarten level, involved simple writing exercises. I would grade students based on their sentence structures, word placement and punctuation. I would offer simple lessons on the chalkboard, and students would participate in speaking exercises, and bolster the lessons of the day with homework assignments in their workbooks.

Proofreading

One of the most important assignments to my students were journal assignments. Each student had a small writing notebook in which they would write about their experience. These experiences would range from anything to playing with siblings, class trips and visiting family members. I would read each and every journal entry and compliment excellent writing, as well as provide feedback on spelling or grammatical errors that I would encounter.

Public Speaking

Many assignments, particularly during examination periods, involved students reading a prepared speech or getting in front of the class to talk about their day or something that happened the day before. I would emphasize using previous lessons for the month (for example, a week or so after learning about nouns, I would see how many nouns a student could correctly use) and offer feedback during after the exercise. Many students also would participate in a big, end-of-term function, such as a presentation or a play performed by the students that would emphasize their ability to speak in front of a crowd, and I would usually assist the children as they practiced their lines and wrote their presentations.

Vocabulary

Every class and every new lesson, the students would learn new English vocabulary words. One of the more enjoyable methods of teaching vocabulary would involve seeing which words students liked as they learned them (some students liked "football" while others liked words such as "kitten" or "uncle") and having them either write a few sentences or speak to the class about what this word means for them. Making lessons fun and personal like this were a big help to the students in reinforcing vocabulary retention.
