Bio

Hey there, I'm Josh! I've been tutoring on and off for more than 10 years. I started as a 16-year-old volunteer tutor in my high school Learning Center, where as an AP and Honors student I helped kids from grades 9-12. I graduated with a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering and a minor in psychology from RPI in New York. Over the years, I've tutored algebra, physics, and chemistry, mainly to high school students aged 14-18. I have also tutored junior high school students (ages 12-14) in earlier...

I have also tutored junior high school students (ages 12-14) in earlier level math, and worked with some adults (age 45+) struggling with basic math for passing pre-employment screening tests. If you happen to be from New York state, I have primarily tutored for the Regents exams. My experience is entirely focused on 1-on-1 tutoring, as it allows me to really understand how that person thinks. My teaching method is entirely self-developed (as my background is not in Education), but could be described as Socratic, as I tend to ask students lots of questions to test their understanding of a subject. 1-on-1 tutoring also gives me the freedom to improvise, such as the time I explained the concept of ionization energy in chemistry by comparing it to Harry Potter catching the Snitch.

How many times have you been asked to “solve for X” or “multiply this by the sum of that” and thought, “AAAAH please make this math go away”? Hey, that’s okay, I get it! Maybe you and math don’t jive. Or maybe you do like it, and you’re just struggling because you don’t have the best teacher right now. I was that way with English. I work as an engineer by day, but tutoring math has always been one of my hobbies.

My goal with you will be to understand your logical thought process when looking at a math problem and figuring out where you’re going wrong. Standardized math tests may be hard, but they're totally beatable! I don’t teach memorization unless absolutely necessary; for example, your times tables or a formula that won't be provided to you on a test. More importantly, I focus on making sure a student recognizes
