About Mohammad

I recently completed my Baccalaureate degree in Biology with summa cum laude from The City College of New York, CUNY.

During my academic years in college, I have been honored with multiple prestigious awards and scholarships. In 2014, I was awarded with Dr. Bernard Levine scholarship. This is one of the most generous scholarships and only awarded to 3 new students per year.

I was one of the recipients of this award in the year of 2014. The selection is made based on the highest academic achievement and a nomination from the faculty. I ended up receiving another scholarship in my senior year, 2016, due to my contributions to a Biology research project on the effect of insecticide on bean beetles that I had worked on for 3 years. My plan is to attend a medical school in 2018.

I am very passionate about tutoring and this is why I spend most of my spare time tutoring. During the first summer (June-August, 2013) of college, I started working as a full-time tutor at a tutoring center in Jamaica, New York. I tutored students in groups from 5th, 6th, and 9-12th grades. My jobs included but were not limited to tutoring the 5th and 6th graders in mathematics, and the high school students in preparing for Living Environment, Chemistry, and Physics regents exams.

I was able to tutor at that center for 2 months before I had to start my classes in August, 2013. My passion for tutoring persisted and, hence, I decided to tutor students part-time privately. I have been doing private tutoring since 2013 on the weekends for 4-6 hours. I have had students in groups and one-on-one fashion when I private tutored. I mainly tutored students in 3rd grades, 5th grades, and 10th grades. My tutoring focused in math for 3rd and 5th graders, and science courses such as biology, chemistry, and physics for 10th graders. During this time, I also tutored students for the math sections of SHSAT and SAT tests. My enthusiasm for tutoring did not stop there. I went on to tutor students on my college campus as well starting in 2013.

I was a part of the Academic Resource Center at the City College of New York, which provided tutoring services to students. I tutored at that center from September, 2013 to June, 2014. I tutored for 8-10 hours per week between my classes for 2 semesters. I tutored college students in Elements of Statistics and Mathematics, Calculus 1, Foundation of Biology 1 and 2, and General Chemistry 1 and 2. At this center, I tutored students in one-on-one fashion. Nevertheless, there were instances when I would tutor 2-3 students as a group per session.

I have been a tutor for 4.5 years now. In these years of tutoring, I had the opportunities to meet students from different backgrounds, which made me realize that every student is unique about how they process information and learn materials. So, I prefer spending 10-15 minutes at the beginning of my tutoring sessions first identifying the difficulties the students have and then strategizing plans to overcome those difficulties.

I mainly tutor because I find it very rewarding and beneficial for students. My sole purpose is to make students comfortable and confident enough to be able to overcome their own fears/obstacles. I personally prefer tutoring students by insisting them to construct understanding through their own reasoning. I believe this is an intensive approach to learning because it makes the students learn via active process which is much more productive than passive learning. Thus, I highly encourage my students in developing skills that facilitate their logical reasoning to answer questions. And this approach helped many of my students grasp topics very rapidly and for a very long period of time.

My mission is to incorporate my knowledge and experience to better serve my student community. I focus on creating a very positive and comfortable tutoring session where students feel confident to take initiatives in learning. I am very easy to talk to and I always provide feedback that may help students with where they need to reinforce in order to receive maximum benefits from our tutoring sessions.

If you think you need help with any subjects that I have tutoring experience in, please feel free to contact me. I will try my best to address your concerns as soon as possible. I look forward to our exciting yet fun tutoring sessions soon.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
