Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a dual bachelors degree in regular and special education. I have been working in a non-profit residential school for the past 15 years for students with emotional and intellectual disabilities. I have also worked over 13 years in students' homes ranging on ages 3.5-16 as a special education provider. I have extensive experience working with students that are behind academically as well as students that display behavior challenges in the classroom and at home.

Aspergers

I have been working in a non-profit residential school for the past 15 years for students with emotional and intellectual disabilities. The school that I now work for is a residential school for adolescents with Aspergers. I have three positions there including Chairperson on the Committee on Special Education, Special Education Teacher, and Curriculum Coordinator. Career Development

I have a dual bachelors degree in regular and special education. I also hold my initial certification in School Building Leadership.

Before becoming the CSE Chairperson in the first school that I worked in, I was a classroom teacher and Work Study Coordinator. I oversaw the program that had several internships in the community where the students worked two days a week for a half a day. Student's worked in places such as nursing homes, a preschool, the Queens College mailroom, as well as in local parks providing maintenance jobs. I also took students out on full day work sessions for the NYC Summer Youth Program. Part of the curriculum in the Work Study Program was career development, which I wrote lessons for and taught.

English

I have worked for the last 15 years with a multitude of students that are behind academically, therefore needing remedial skills in the area of reading as well as writing. Students that have difficulty with reading comprehension and writing lack basic skills such as locating information in passages via skimming and scanning and they have difficulty seeing the overall main idea and supporting details. Working on these specific skills in isolation as well as in the context of the reading that they need to do (textbooks/novels/short stories for school) as well as increasing time reading independently is how they catch up. In writing, students often have poor grammar knowledge because they did not master it in elementary/middle school but were expected to learn higher level skills such as writing multi-paragraph essays without these pertinent skills. Organization and planning is another deficit for many students in writing. They don't know where to start or how to move from one idea to the next cohesively. These skills can also be taught in isolation with graphic organizers and built on over time so that longer essays can be written in chunks or by using an outline or skeleton approach.

I currently see students on an individual basis teaching them study skills, organization, and planning. Over this past summer I taught a study skills seminar once a week for six weeks. We reviewed how to take notes during a lecture and from text books. We discussed mnemonic devices and visualization strategies for memorization. We reviewed various study strategies such as re-reading notes, overlooking chapters and answering questions at the end, as well as making their own quizzes and index cards.
