St. John Fisher College (Elementary Education)
Nazareth College of Rochester (Master's)
I am a very dedicated, organized, and caring professional. I have my undergraduate in elementary education and my master's in literacy education. Therefore, I am certified in both elementary pre-k through 6th and reading k-12. I have 14 years of teaching experience in the Rochester City School District teaching grades K, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.
Good teaching takes good planning, dedication, compassion, respect, and a determination to meet the individual needs of the students. It must be conducted in a setting that is structured, nurturing, and stimulating. The students should feel safe, motivated, and willing to take risks. This is what I seek to accomplish in every teaching situation. I have an office in my home where I can conduct lessons or I am willing to travel to yours if it is more convenient.
My goal as a teacher is to meet the individual needs of my students to help them reach their full potential and to touch the lives of each student by inspiring him or her and to become an autonomous learner. It is very important to me that I push my students to communicate and reflect on what and how they learned. The process of how students learn is just as important as what students learn. Students must be aware of all stages and processes of learning, including how they learn and reflecting on their learning as well.
As an educator, I provide my students with authentic learning experiences that engage and tap into their many different learning styles. I have a strength in diagnosing student needs, especially in reading, and plan my teaching to meet the individual needs and learning styles of my students. My students are provided with hands-on activities that are meaningful to them. Lessons are built off the students’ strengths while improving upon their needs. Although I specialize in reading, I am very good with breaking down elementary math concepts for students using manipulatives and learning games.
Close communication with parents is something I stress. Involvement and communication with parents as well as the students about their progress is an essential component to a child's success. Frequent conferences with parents is ideal to monitor the progress of the student. I look forward to speaking with you and scheduling a tutoring time with your child! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
