About Thomas

Greetings!

I believe that the journey of test prep mastery allows students an incredible opportunity to become their best selves - laying the foundations for success in the years ahead. During this process, I help students become more efficient learners by practicing smarter-not-harder study habits and teaching them executive function skills such as time management, focus, and clarifying priorities. This leads to higher grades, more free time for their interests, and the energy to explore who they are becoming. I have a lot of fun with my students, but I also hold them accountable to the standard of what I know they can become. If they perform below this, I remind them of their greatness and don't let them settle for less than they can be.

With over 6 years of coaching experience, 500+ hours of nonviolent communication training, and 10 years of teaching experience, I use scientifically proven methodologies to enhance the learning experience. I use empathy to help students accept their own skill level and learning history as a jump off point to going where they want to go. This supports a baseline self-confidence that allows them to believe they can improve and grow. I create meaningful connections between what students already know and what they don't know to facilitate gradually increasing mastery of the material. When all of these factors are present, students experience the safety to enjoy their learning journey and the pride that comes from creating great results.

I also offer all students & parents a free 15-minute consultation before our session so we can make the most of our time when we are together.

Full-Length Practice Test Sundays - Required of students wanting a 150+ point improvement.

I have found that students often underestimate how much work they need to do in order to reliably improve their SAT/ACT scores. I therefore set clear expectations from the start and require all students with goals of improving their score by more than 150 points to take 2 full-length practice tests a month, correct them, and have questions prepared for our sessions. Since students often find it hard to manage their time, I "proctor" 3-hour practice sessions on Sundays online from 6-9pm so students and parents can feel confident this work is being done. This service includes a small extra monthly fee, but ambitious students should make it a high priority to attend.

My Philosophy & Expectations:

I believe we should never lower a goal. It's not just a number on a test, it's about who you become in the process of achieving that grade. Achieving excellence in anything is worth doing, but achieving excellence in something you learn to love is even better. I will hold you accountable to how excellent you can really become. If I see you slacking off I will remind you of how smart and powerful you are until you rise to that level. Put your best into everything you do and your life is bound for success, fulfillment, and joy.

My Academic Background:

I currently score in the 99th percentile on reading/writing and in the 97th percentile in math on official SAT/ACT practice tests. In college, I graduated cum laude ("with honors") and received a distinguished student award for my exceptional work in my undergraduate studies. I have a degree in anthropology and minored in environmental science, and Asian studies. I went back to school for organic chemistry and performed at the top of my class.

My main job for the last decade has been mentoring youth and adults in leadership and personal growth in outdoor and academic settings. When I found Wyzant, I found a perfect platform to contribute my skills and passion by helping younger students get the head start I wish I had in my youth.

When we work together, I am committed to your success and will go the extra mile. I look forward to getting to know how I can support you to feel confident, competent, and excited about what is next for you or your children's life.

Sincerely,
-Thomas

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

PSAT

I now score in the 99th percentile for PSAT reading/writing and 97th percentile for PSAT math. I have over 500+ hours of experience tutoring test preparation in the SAT and PSAT specifically. I use free online systems to help students track their progress and provide a sense of accomplishment. I help them learn memory techniques, advanced vocabulary, grammar rules, math mastery, and study skills to help them excel on the PSAT, the SAT, and college as well.

SAT Math

I now score in the 97th percentile for SAT math. I have also tutored math for over a decade. It did not come easily to me, but after thousands of hours of study and practice, I have found ways to explain the concepts simply to struggling students. I help students connect the dots so each principle connects to another and then math simply makes sense. I make it fun by honoring the student's individual learning style and using mnemonics to help them remember rules and laws.

SAT Reading

I now score in the 99th percentile for SAT reading/writing. I am also a professional writer and have published over 100,000 words worth of writing in the last 5 years. I took over 30 credits of English classes in my undergraduate education, all of which I excelled in. I also am in high demand for proofreading and revising the work of colleagues. I have been helping students of all ages with test prep (Regents, SAT, GRE, ACT) to improve their scores significantly with consistent tutoring.

SAT Writing

I now score in the 99th percentile for SAT reading/writing. I am a professional writer and have published over 100,000 words worth of writing in the last 5 years. I took over 30 credits of English classes in my undergraduate education, all of which I excelled in. I have taken 4 years of Latin and am a creative writer of non-fiction essays.

Study Skills

I have been teaching accelerated learning techniques and organization skills to adults and children since 2011. Through hundreds of hours of studying productivity tips, time management, and leadeing teams, I have found universal strategies to make the study environment fun and empowering. I also know how to speed read (~1,500 words per minute), meditate, and use enhanced memory techniques to cut my study time in half and I help other students do the same.

Vocabulary

I am a proficient writer and avid reader - writing around 2,000 words a day and reading at least 10 books a month. Since I was a young boy I always looked up the meaning of a word I didn't know, and as a writer it is deeply important to me to understand subtle distinctions between similar words. I also studied Latin for 4 years and am familiar with ancient Greek philosophy, leading me to know many roots of English words.

Makes learning fun

Thomas has been tutoring my daughter for the SAT for months. They meet online for an hour once/week. This last time, her score went up 260 points! His easy going nature and great sense of humor make her sessions enjoyable instead of boring. I would highly recommend Thomas for Math and English tutoring. He seems well balanced in both.
