Bio

I am a high school math teacher in the New York Metropolitan area. I have over a decade of experience in educational settings working with kids of all ages. In addition to teaching high school, I've worked as a teaching assistant, lead teacher, and a one-on-one tutor in pre-school, elementary, and middle school environments. I have also taught individual and small-group classes focused on preparing students for SAT and ACT examinations.

I am a confident and competent tutor in most academic subjects, but my specialty is math. I currently teach Regents-level Common Core Geometry and AP Calculus, and have previously taught Algebra I and Algebra II, as well as a remedial course with a focus on algebra, proportional reasoning, and statistics.

My goal is simple, to do everything I can to help my students succeed. My tutoring sessions are intended to supplement the work my students are doing in school, meaning I can aid in any subject area in which they have struggled in the past or keep them on top of what they are currently working on. I don't believe in stressing my students out with overwhelming amounts of extra work, and I aim to make my sessions as enjoyable as possible. I realize that every student has different needs, and I will tailor my sessions to each individual student's learning style.

FUN FACT: I recently competed on (and won!) an episode of ABC's "The Chase." I've also appeared on "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!"

If you would like more information about the subjects I offer, or to schedule a session, please feel free to email me. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

I previously worked for a nationally franchised tutoring company, providing math and reading support for elementary, middle, and high school students. In addition, I have provided academic support for elementary students privately, thru Wyzant, and on other platforms.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

When I decided I wanted to be a teacher, it was an obvious choice for me to pursue a degree in math education because of my own strong performance in the subject growing up. Always top of my class, and even occasionally skipping a few grades, I have always been confident in my math abilities. I earned a top score of 7 in IB math and scored in the 99th percentile on the math section of my SAT. While I aim to teach math in high school, the bulk of my experience has been with elementary and middle school-aged students. I have been a camp counselor and elementary teaching assistant for nearly a decade, and i even ran an educational program for kindergarteners. I can translate my math skills to students of any age and at any level.

Geometry,

Geometry

I specialize in math enrichment for high school students, many of whom are taking geometry. I am confident and comfortable walking students through proofs, reviewing the rules related to angle measures, and determining congruence between shapes. Most importantly, I can help students extract information from word problems, enabling them to determine what operations they need to perform and making the whole process appear much simpler. This greatly reduces stress and anxiety and makes for excellent test takers.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I teach a weekly SAT class where I specialize on the math section. I scored in the 99th percentile on the math section of my own SAT and I am now pursuing certification as a high school math teacher. I am familiar with the changes to the math section on the new SAT and I am well-equipped to introduce strategies to help students master both versions of the test.

ACT Math,

ACT Math

I regularly teach ACT prep classes both to groups and on a one-on-one basis. In my experience, the key to ACT prep is not necessarily drilling content, but rather learning how to treat the test like a puzzle. While my lessons definitely include a review of math concepts and formulas, I am also sure to teach my students techniques for navigating a high-pressure multiple choice exam. We discuss how to determine what a specific question is asking for, how to eliminate extraneous information and avoid unnecessary computation, and how to use wrong answers to our advantage. Most importantly, I always make sure that my students enter test day calm and confident, because the right attitude can alleviate stress and yield strong performances.

I currently work for a professional tutoring company where I specialize in math enrichment for high school students. In most cases, this involves preparing them for Regents exams. I am familiar with the structure of Regents exams as well as some of the changes that New York State has made in order to adapt the tests to the common core. In addition, in high school, I completed my own Regents diploma with distinction (completed subjects included: English, Math A, Math B, Living Environment, Chemistry, Earth Science, Global History, U.S. History, and Spanish). I have kept up with the various exams' format changes over the years, so I am an excellent resource for both content reinforcement and test taking strategies.

Great first session

Hi Andrew, Penny liked you very much, and I'm glad she showed understanding of the material. We look forward to working together on both subjects.

Wonderful, engaging, tutor with knowledge of challenging Scarsdale curriculum.

Andrew is very personable and he is very familiar with the Scarsdale curriculum. He was extremely prompt responding to my emails and agreed to look over my son's challenging 6th grade math problems that I sent him via text before meeting with us. My son really liked him and enjoyed his first lesson. Andrew offered to speak with Nick's teacher to discuss future support. What sets him apart is his knowledge of the challenging Scarsdale curriculum, his enthusiasm about teaching math and his wonderful personality. We highly recommend him.
