My 40 Years of teaching mathematics, includes 32 years at the high school level. The remainder were at the middle/junior high school level. My experience includes 23 years at Scarsdale High School, where I taught algebra1, geometry, algebra2/trig, pre-calculus, and calculus. I taught each of those types of courses, there and elsewhere, at more than one level. Classes varied from slower paced with a lot of reinforcement to honors level classes with frequent challenges and a faster pace.
I have tutored for many years as well. I've tutored all the subject areas mentioned above as well as SAT math and pre-algebra. In most cases, I worked with students on course material they were trying to learn in school. However, I also tutored students that were looking to advance to a higher level in math. I tutor for understanding rather than memorization. I explain, demonstrate, ask a lot of questions and then like to watch the students do work. From my experience, I know there are often multiple ways to do a problem and certainly multiple ways to explain it. I also realize that with a student that is having difficulty it takes time for things to "click" and so I am very patient. Often it's a case of "holes" in someone's background affecting their understanding of new concepts. So we have to work on those "holes". If appropriate, I will communicate with the student's teacher in school. In addition, I like to leave a student something to work on that we've focused on during the session, but this is somewhat dependent upon the student's available time. David works with my children on AP Calculus and Algebra II/Trigonometry. He has been able to raise their test scores and strengthen their skills within a very short period of time.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've taught and tutored all levels geometry for more than 30 years. I've helped students who wanted to learn a basic geometry as well as students working in regular and honors level geometry courses.
I've taught prealgebra for about 10 years. In addition, I've taught algebra 1 for more than 20 years. As a result, I understand the material and am aware of the concepts necessary for a student in prealgebra to be successful as he or she moves forward in mathematics.
I've taught precalculus for more 20 years. During that time I've taught and tutored students for both a standard level precalculus course as well as an honors precalculus course.
I have prepared students through tutoring to take the SAT for more than 20 years. I've also regularly included SAT questions on assignments and assessments, when teaching math courses in high school. I always spend significant time on strategy as well as the mathematics being tested.
I've taught trigonometry for more than 25 years. During that time I've taught and tutored students on both a basic level and a much more advanced level. Some of the students I tutored were taking the course in school while being tutored. Other students were being tutored by me to advance to a higher level in school without actually taking the course in school.
