About Amanda

Hello, I'm Amanda and I am a Brown University graduate available to tutor History and English. I have extensive experience tutoring American, World, and European History as well as ESL, TOEFL, Writing, Reading, and Literature.

I prepare students for the Regents and Advanced Placement exams and have helped students achieve a "5" on their A.P. exams as well as raise their grades significantly. In the past, I have helped both ESL students and students who struggle with learning disabilities achieve their academic objectives. I also assist students applying to colleges and secondary schools with their admissions essays, so that they might put their best foot forward. It is important for the student to not only select the best topic, but also to effectively communicate their unique qualities to admissions committees. My goal is to guide the student through this difficult and often stressful process.

I am a former Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor in History and English and scored a 750/800 on the SAT Writing test and in the 95th percentile on the GRE Verbal section. In the past, I have worked as a writer/editor for a music magazine and earned a master's degree in History from the New School for Social Research where I worked as a research assistant. I also have served as a guest lecturer for a World History course at a university in New York City and was selected to speak and serve on a panel at an international World History conference.

I look forward to helping you or your child reach their academic goals, and will do so with patience and empathy.

Thank you for your consideration and happy learning!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I have earned a B.A. from Brown University in the literature of the American Civil War, an M.A. in History from the New School for Social Research and am a current doctoral candidate at St. John's University in History with an emphasis on education.

I have had previous experience tutoring students from the eighth grade through the college level and have served as a guest lecturer for a freshman World History course. My prior teaching experience has focused on American, World and European History. Much of my prior experience has been with A.P. students, and I have helped them raise their grades significantly on both the multiple choice and essay sections of the exam, as well as improving their grades on tests and papers throughout the academic year. I believe in utilizing an approach that is tailored to suit the different learning styles of each student, so that they might improve academically in the way that suits them best.

I have also published an article in an academic journal on the American Revolution, worked as a research assistant for a history professor writing a book about the Great Depression, and was an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor in both History and English.

World History

I was an A.P. Scholar with Honor in History and have a master's degree in History from the New School for Social Research. In the past, I have also served as a guest lecturer for a freshman World History course, and was a speaker and panelist at an international World History conference in April 2015.

Writing

I have an undergraduate degree in literature from Brown University, worked as an editor and writer at a music magazine, and received a 750/800 on the SAT Writing section. I also am an A.P. Scholar with Honor in both English language and literature, scored in the 95th percentile on the GRE verbal, and am a published author.

When teaching writing, I emphasize the proper structure for an essay. This includes clear topic sentences, the development of a strong argument, correct grammar and vocabulary, and a solid conclusion.

Finally, with respect to personal essays, I focus on the development of each student's individual voice, which is especially important for college and secondary school admissions essays.

Amanda was great. Got a lot done in a short period of time. Easy to understand and was fun. Came fully prepared on a complicated subject. I highly recommend her as a tutor and for writing an essay.
