I am currently a graduate student pursuing a masters degree in Engineering Science and Mechanics from Penn State University, and I am completing my degree remotely while living in Williamstown, MA. During my undergraduate and graduate enrollment, I have had several years experience teaching and tutoring undergraduate math and science courses. My undergraduate major at Williams College was Computer Science and I have spent a summer as a software development intern for Microsoft, so I am very comfortable tutoring both computer science in addition to engineering and math. I have received great feedback from students and supervisors in both in the teaching and tutoring of these topics, with many students meeting me regularly as they find themselves continuously improving their understanding.

In addition to my practical experience teaching, I have had held a graduate assistantship at Penn State's teacher development center, where I have learned and taught theory about being an effective teacher and tutor. I realize the importance of listening to what a student knows, how they learn, and what their goals are so as to effectively lead them to those goals. In engineering and the sciences I implement these ideas often by using lots of relevant problems and examples to both engage and motivate students all while teaching them the concepts they need to succeed.

As an interdisciplinary graduate student in an engineering discipline, I have a broad but thorough knowledge of math and sciences, and I believe my teaching and tutoring experience allows me to share that knowledge with students so that they might reach their goals. If you are looking for some assistance with your own study, please contact me so that we can discuss how I can help!

C,

C

I received a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, and several of the courses in the major relied on using C (as well as the extensions of C++ and C#) to implement programs. I have worked in C programming and related languages both in my own graduate work as well as with many students learning the language in their college courses.
C++,

C++

I have a bachelor's degree in computer science where many courses required programming in C++. I have industry experience as an intern at Microsoft and also as a freelance developer for research applications. I have been tutoring in computer science courses since 2006, and I am familiar with a broad range of computer programming topics.
Computer Science,

Computer Science

I have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Williams College, and I have one summer of work experience as a software development intern at Microsoft. At Williams, I was a peer tutor for 3 semesters in freshman/sophomore college level courses (Data Structures and Advanced Programming, Computer Organization), tutoring most often in project-based courses with assistance in writing of programs to solve problems.
Java,

Java

I have a bachelor's degree in computer science where many courses required programming in Java, and as a high school student I also took the AP Computer Science A and AB exams, which were Java based. I have tutored several college and high school level computer science courses which included Java in labs and projects, so I am familiar with both the theory as well as the application of the computer science concepts into Java-coded programs.
MATLAB,

MATLAB

I am a 7th year graduate student in Engineering, and over that time have used MATLAB daily for numerical modeling of natural systems for my thesis research. I have tutored students who are seeing MATLAB for the first time as well as students using MATLAB for applications of numerical methods. In either type of MATLAB course, I focus on guided programming practice to ensure that the student understands the course concepts as well as develops their programming skill.

Statistics

Statistics and Probability were core topics in my Computer Science bachelor's degree program as well as my current graduate courses in an Engineering program. From my experience in coursework, applied research, and working with students as a tutor, I have a solid understanding of not only the main concepts for statistics and probability but also the applications to research methods, machine learning, and signal analysis.

Calculus

I have been tutoring college level math since 2006, and I have experience tutoring in pure math calculus courses as well as applied courses, such as calculus-based physics and statistics courses. While in high school, I scored a 5 on both the AP Calculus AB and BC exams, and I have taken collegiate and graduate math courses as part of my training toward a master's degree in engineering.
Physics,

Physics

As a graduate student in engineering, I have taught and assisted teaching Physics-based engineering courses for undergraduates, such as Statics and Mechanics. As a high school student I took the AP Physics C exam, and scored a 5, so I am familiar with the subject material and the AP test content. When tutoring physics, I use examples to help clarify concepts, and then I focus as much time as possible on working through practice problems to ensure that the students understand both the concepts as well as the applications.

Thoughtful and Knowledgeable Expert!

Stephen is a wonderful tutor. He is very patient, knowledgeable, and great at collaborating with his students. Rather than just lecturing, he asks questions, and helps YOU solve the problems you are working, so that you get practice and understanding of how, and why, to solve a problem a certain way. He is versatile and can answer or find the answer to any question I've ever asked and has personally helped save me during the hardest class I've ever had!

Knowledgeable and patient.

Very knowledgeable. I needed help on my Bioinformatics homework and it is very involved. What we didn't cover in our lesson, he tried to follow up with through messages. He is a nice person.

Highly knowledgeable, coherent and patient tutor

From the time we started the session, Stephen proved to be articulate on the subject. He has plenty of experience in C++ and was able to guide me through the challenges I came across. His way of explaining the material is truly effective. What I valued most from our tutoring session was that he took the time to make sure I understood the concepts. I highly recommend him to any CS student seeking an excellent tutor.

Great Java Tutor

After having to withdraw from Java, in the fall, at Auburn University, my mom found Stephen and I retook Java in the Spring. With Stephen's help I went from withdrawing from the class to passing it with an 'A'. I highly recommend Stephen! He is very knowledge and is great to work with. I would use him again, if needed and would refer him to others. Thank you Stephen for helping me pass Java!! Seth
