About Sarah

Hello! My name is Sarah Jo and I would love to help you out with your math problems. I graduated with my B.S. in Mathematics in 2013 and am certified to teach in NYS. I just graduated with my M.S. in adult education, but my passion for math education is still in the forefront of my heart!
I have experience working with students in grades K-12, as well as college level mathematics. My favorite math subject is algebra, and I love a challenge.
I have experience teaching common core, and have spent three years teaching in a gifted math program as well.
I hope to get to work with you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

As part of my teacher certification program, Algebra 1 was a primary focus for two semesters. I have worked with students across a variety of academic levels on Algebra 1, including students that were not native English speakers. In my student teaching experience, I worked with three different Algebra 1 classes, and have tutored Algebra 1 students for more than 5 years.

Bible Studies

My current full-time position is as the Business Manager for a Catholic Church. Part of my responsibilities have included setting up various Bible Study groups, and exploring any and all resources that will be available to them. Although there is a primary focus on the bible used in Catholic Churches, I have also joined a group that works on non-denominational bible studies in order to learn everything I can about the subject.

Calculus

Calculus was a required course for me to take at the beginning of my math program and the material covered became very handy in other courses as well. I have worked with many students in calculus assignments and enjoy being able to apply the material to ideas outside of the classroom.

Common Core

I completed my teaching certification in New York State at the same time that the Common Core was being implemented across the country. I have spent three years looking over the Common Core and familiarizing myself with its standards and processes. I currently help out teachers around my neighborhood who struggle to engage the students with the new standards; as a team we work with the parents to get them involved in the learning process as well.

Elementary (K-6th)

After completing my undergraduate degree I was employed in a Charter Elementary School and worked with grades K-4. I have also volunteered at local elementary schools since I was in high school, and have always enjoyed the time spent working with the students. I am certified to teach math in grades 5-12, however I have taken the time to educate myself about the subjects taught in K-4.

Linear Algebra

As part of the requirements to complete my bachelors of science degree in mathematics I was required to take two courses that revolved around linear algebra. I also have taught linear algebra as part of pre-calculus courses during student teaching and in the gifted math program at the University of Buffalo.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is one of my life-lines when it comes to preparing lessons for students and for the business that I manage. There is just so much that you can do with PowerPoint! Although I have never taken a formal course in PowerPoint, I have specifically taken the time to go through the program and learn as much about it as I can, taking notes along the way so that I am able to reference them at any point.

Microsoft Publisher

As a part of my secretarial duties at my current job, Microsoft Publisher is a program that I use on a daily basis. From creating different pamphlets to be handed out to those I work with, to designing images that will be posted on the website, Publisher has become an important part of my life. I have taken a few online courses to learn the intricacies of Microsoft Publisher, and my experiences in those courses I believe prepare me to help others tackle the program.
