My name is Ryan and I have a wide variety of prior experiences in teaching and tutoring with young people. My primary areas of expertise are history/social studies, reading/writing skills, essay editing and support, college admissions essays, and test prep, especially SAT, GRE, and AP history exams (see below for my own scores).

History/ Social Studies Experience: During the school year, I work full-time as a certified History/ Social Studies Teacher at a local high school in Upstate New York. I’ve history for five years at the high-school level and also two years at the college level during my graduate studies. I have taught a wide variety of courses, including Global History 9 (ancient/medieval), Global History II (modern), The American Civil War, Economics, U. S. History (both 8th and 11th Grade), and a World Today/Current Events elective. I have been consistently ranked "Highly effective" every year through New York State's annual professional review system.

Before teaching, I spent seven years in intensive study of history at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I have always been a lifelong lover of history, and so I moved to Washington, DC for college to immerse myself in "living history" every single day. It was an amazing experience, and certainly helped to solidify my interest in teaching social studies.

ELA (Writing/Reading) Experience: I serve as the Coordinator of my school's Writing Lab, which gives me valuable experience helping students hone their writing skills for essays at the every stage of the process- from brainstorming to essay structure to proofreading. I truly relish the opportunity to help prospective students grow as writers, whether their task is a college admissions essay, a term paper, or an SAT/ACT writing prompt.

I also have five years of experience teaching reading skills classes through a local university for students ages K-12, in which I helped students hone their skills in comprehension, textbook reading, fluency, beginning phonics, essay-writing, long-wor

Criminal Justice

I graduated summa cum laude from Catholic University, having studied History and Philosophy with a research concentration in law and justice in early modern Europe. From there, I pursued a Master’s degree in European history on full scholarship at Binghamton University. Since then, I have taught high-school social studies for five years, teaching such subjects as Government/Economics, U. S. History, Current Events, and both Ancient and Modern Global History. My teaching includes extensive instruction on the development of law codes, both ancient and present. Particular emphasis is place on the emergence of American jurisprudence within the wider foundation of natural law theory and natural rights theory, both products of the European Enlightenment.

Best Writing Tutor

As an ESL student, I have fear in writing tests. So I asked for Ryan’s help, and it was the right choice! Ryan quickly understands my strengths and weaknesses and offers specific guidance. It is very helpful to understand how I can improve my writing skills.

Very helpful and to-the-point!

I'm working on my GRE writing with Ryan currently, and I love working with Ryan! Of course, I first saw his price and was thinking, well, even if it's bad, he's clearly cheaper than others, so let me just give this a try. After having the online tutor session, I was so happy I chose Ryan because he answered all my questions! Writing section in any test is very vague to me, and a lot of GRE reviews don't grade writing, or even when they do, it's just a number. I knew I needed to improve, but wasn't sure how. Ryan has helped me tremendously in pinpointing exactly where I needed to improve, and also how I needed to improve. I always struggled in brainstorming for ideas, and now I'm feeling a lot more confident with attacking an issue task with just 3 sessions with Ryan!! Anyone looking for writing help, I highly recommend Ryan!!!

Helpful and methodical

Ryan helped me prep for the analytical writing portion of the GRE. We went over a test essay that I had written and he gave me specific areas that I can focus on to improve my score. It was a great lesson and I hope to take a few more before I take the test. Thanks Ryan!

Very thorough and helpful comments on GRE AWA essay help!

Asked Ryan for help with the GRE AWA essays, as he is one of the only tutors I found on Wyzant that has a 6 in the Analytical Writing area of the exam! (Nearly all others have a 5 or below.) He's been helping me improve from a 5 to a 6 on the essays with strong and specific feedback. The page always returns back red with markings, both general and syntax related in a very thorough way. Also very quick turnarounds of pretty much just 1 day. His comments have been helping me build confidence to get that extra point. Highly recommend him!
