In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. In my classroom/kitchen, I try to instill the importance of work and what it takes to work in the real world. Many students do not realize what an employee is looking for, so I introduce different ideas and scenarios that will hopefully one day assist them in getting a job and developing more independence for themselves.
I have over 10 years of experience in the food service industry. I have a degree from the Institute of Culinary Education in NYC (2004-2005). For the last 2 years, I have been in charge of the Food Service program at my NYC public high school. I teach industry terminology, equipment identification, cooking techniques, baking, safety and sanitation, and organization.
For the past 2 years, I have worked with the special needs population running the Food Service Department at my school.
