My name is Chef Scott. I am a certified NY Culinary Arts Teacher. I work in Queens at a District 75 school (special education) running the Food Service/Culinary Arts program.
I believe in real life, hands-on learning that exposes kids to a work-like environment. Culinary Arts is not only working with food, but also math, science, history, reading, writing and social interaction. I feel it is one of the best industries to learn work ethic, responsibility, and accountability, which helps prepare young students for a successful career path. Not only can I provide cooking skills, but also baking and pastry. If you are looking to guide your child into a career path or just introduce them to daily living skills in the cooking field, wait no further. My name is Chef Scott. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In my classroom/kitchen, I try to instill the importance of work and what it takes to work in the real world. Many students do not realize what an employee is looking for, so I introduce different ideas and scenarios that will hopefully one day assist them in getting a job and developing more independence for themselves.
I have over 10 years of experience in the food service industry. I have a degree from the Institute of Culinary Education in NYC (2004-2005). For the last 2 years, I have been in charge of the Food Service program at my NYC public high school. I teach industry terminology, equipment identification, cooking techniques, baking, safety and sanitation, and organization.
For the past 2 years, I have worked with the special needs population running the Food Service Department at my school. Using differentiated learning techniques, I am able to have all students involved and engaged in daily activities while creating responsibility, accountability, and work ethic within them.
