About Jason

I have several years of tutoring experience. As a Writing Tutor at Adelphi University for three years, I served undergraduate and graduate students and assisted them with concepts such as: grammar, diction, organization, clarity, etc. Currently, I am working as an instructor at Mathnasium. Here, I assist elementary, middle and high school math students with homework and test preparation.

When I tutor, I strive to buildup and reinforce the framework of a student's knowledge and self-reliance. As a writing tutor, I worked with a diverse student body, including ones whom were: international, in special education, graduate and undergraduate. My tutoring style was one of minimalism. Generally, as a tutor I would ask questions to the student; I often asked, "Where's your thesis?" In this manner, the student is responsible for determining the destiny of his paper. This allows for ore critical thinking, and prepares the student for after the session (when I will no longer be working with him).

While working at Mathnasium, it is my job at to ensure that math is conceivable and attainable for each student. Although a student may be in a particular grade, he or she may not even know fundamental arithmetic. Just recently, an seventh grade algebra 1 student was struggling with division. I realized that he still had not memorized his "Times tables". Therefore, I printed out multiplication tables for him, and instructed him to practice them each and every night.

With regards to my credentials, I was an honors-math Student in Great Neck South Middle School and Great Neck South High School (every year from 2005 through 2011).

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

As a former college student, I have taken the ACT as one of means of qualifying for acceptance into a university. By working with students at Mathnasium, I have developed a patient and confidence-building approach to tutoring. In doing so, I am able to motivate any student to improve their ACT math skill and self-esteem, so that they are both competent and comfortable in the testing arena. This is especially important on an achievement test, such as the ACT where the stakes are so high.

Algebra 1

As a Mathnasium Tutor, I have developed an innovative strategy and successful to teach Algebra 1. Instead of using the traditional classroom method, I ask probing questions, to aide a student in his or her own pursuit of the answer. For example, "in a solve for X variable" I may ask a student: "What must be done to one side of the equation, so that the "X" is isolate form the constant and the coefficient; What operation will achieve this goal?, etc. In doing so, I am giving the student autonomy and confidence to achieve the answer on his or her own; hence this pedagogy helps to build a framework of confidence and mental math for that student.

Common Core

As a tutor at Mathnasium, I work with primarily elementary and middle school students. I am proud to say that I have spent over a hundred hours focused on tutoring the Math Portion of the Common Core Exam.
At Mathnasium, we focus on a well rounded approach, in which the student completes practice examinations, and then as the tutor I assign exercises targeted to improve the students weakness. For example, if a student is struggling with counting, I would teach and assign exercises which practice reading, writing and speaking out a sequence of numbers.

Elementary Math

As a tutor at Mathnasium, nearly half of my students are Elementary school, ages 5 through 10. I have taught kids to learn to count, write numbers, add and subtract. Also I have explained patterns, units of measurement, and word problems. Furthermore, I incorporate, coloring or games into each lesson, so that the student learns to associate learning with happiness and joy, rather than regret and discomfort. Overall, I encourage a student to ask questions and focus on material for as long as possible, without getting up or getting distracted.

Grammar

As a student at Adelphi University, over a two-year period I served as a peer writing tutor for over one hundred students. Many of these students were undergraduates, some were in the Masters Programs. Additionally, at least 10% of my tutees could be classified as international students. Generally, in tutoring sessions, I assisted a writer with thesis statements, organization, clarity, citation style and proofreading. I have experience serving clients with both expository (i.e. essays) and creative pieces (i.e. poems).

Marketing

I graduated from Adelphi University in May 2015 with a Minor in Marketing. Some of my classes included: Marketing, Organizational Behavior, Industrial Organization, Retail Management, and Sports Marketing. In my "Marketing" class, I led a group project which involved interviewing the owner of a jewelry store and implementing a suitable marketing plan for her business to follow.
Secondly, I have a New York State Health and Accident Insurance License, with Aflac, a supplemental health insurance company. From June through November 2015 , I was involved with cold calling, presenting and selling products directly to clients.
Overall, my college and employment experience has prepared me to educate students about the inner-workings of a marketing, marketing terminology and how it is applied in the world.

Music Theory

For one, I have taken two high school-level and one college-level music theory course. On top of this, as a vocalist, I have been selected three times through NYSSMA to sing in the"All County Choir" (from 2009 through 2011). These singers (myself included) represented the top 10% in Nassau County. Also, I have sung principal roles in operas including "The Tales Hoffman","The Merry Widow" and "Gianni Schicchi".

Prealgebra

I am qualified to teach this subject, since I have done so successfully at Mathnasium. I have worked for nine months with students through the Algebra 2 Level. I have spent hundreds of tutoring at Mathnasium. Of these hours, I have spent at least 150 hours tutoring pre-algebra concepts.

As high school student, at Great Neck South I was part of the honors math program, where I graduated with a GPA of 3.7. I excelled at areas of math including Pre-algebra, Algebra 1 & 2, and Geometry. I continued my math journey, at Adelphi University, where as a Psychology major, I studied statistics.

Probability

As a tutor, I have found that teaching probability is a highly interactive and enjoyable subject. Often times, I will explain probability with the help of dice, or a standard deck of cards. Since games of chance are best real world examples of probability in action, I ask questions, such as "What is the likelihood of rolling a '7'?", or "What is the chance of drawing a red '2' from a standard deck of cards. For other questions involving permutations and combinations, I may ask ask a student, "How many combinations are possible for a particular lock?" Overall, I have had great success teaching using questions very similar to the one's I have just described.

Proofreading

As a student at Adelphi University, over a two-year period I served as a peer writing tutor for over one hundred students. Many of these students were undergraduates, some were in the Masters Programs. Additionally, at least 10% of my tutees could be classified as international students. Generally, in tutoring sessions, I assisted a writer with thesis statements, organization, clarity, citation style and proofreading. I have experience serving clients with both expository (i.e. essays) and creative pieces (i.e. poems).

Psychology

I was a Psychology Major at Adelphi University (2012-2015), and graduated in 2015 with a Bachelors degree, and a 3.8 G.P.A (overall), including a 3.75 GPA in my Psychology classes. I have taken courses including: Developmental Psychology, Trauma and Resilience; Creativity, Perception and the Visual Arts and more. Overall, I have gained an appreciation for the power of psychology, and how it can be applied to motivate and encourage students to learn and prosper.

SAT Math

As a college graduate, I took the SAT twice, as my standardized-test criteria for acceptance into my alma mater (Adelphi University). By working with students at Mathnasium, I have developed a patient and confidence-building approach to tutoring. In doing so, I am able to motivate any student to improve their SAT math skill and self-esteem, so that they are both competent and comfortable in the testing arena. This is especially important on an achievement test, such as the SAT where the stakes are so high.

Study Skills

As a student,I achieved a GPA of 3.7 in high school, and of 3.8 in college. Throughout my college career, not only have I succeeded, but I helped others succeed. Ahead of many of the exams I had, I would work with other classmates and help them study. I have done so by creating flashcards, and typed up various review sheets in preparation for various exams. I was able to share these review sheets and help other students succeed in a particular exam. Besides this, with respect to research, as a Writing Tutor at Adelphi, I was able to implement excellent research strategies to assist students in streamlining research to proper databases and scholarly sources.

Writing

My experience writing goes from entering and winning a high-school poetry contest, to serving as a tutor at Adelphi University (2013-2015). Overall, as I tutor, I focus on improving a paper's word economy, In other words, I strive to allow a student to become as efficient as possible with his words, so that each word in each sentence has a meaningful purpose, and has a meaningful embodiment within the fabric of a sentence, a paragraph and ultimately the entire paper. Additionally, I may assist with research citation (MLA and APA formatting), grammar checking and proofreading.
