About Bill

I have a Ph.D. in Psychology from CUNY who has both taught and tutored for years. I have worked with all sorts of students, from first graders to adults. My student have ranged from gifted to LD to ADHD to perfectly average. Academically, I have expertise in learning, memory, emotional processes, and behavioral neuroscience, so I am well-trained in understanding the processes that can block learning. I also have a good sense of humor, and tutoring has always been a pleasant experience for both the student and for me.

Just as I have never shied away from learning difficulties, I also have taught some very technical courses at Queens College, such as Neuroscience of Memory and Psychometrics. My evaluations (from both faculty and students) as a college professor are universally excellent, and reflect my ability to motivate students, clearly structure lessons, and make very complex material understandable.

I have taught college-level statistics many times, and have done graduate-level statistics as part of my research. SPSS is no problem.

Name a field of psychology: I've probably taught it, and can tutor it. These would include developmental, neurobiological, personality, clinical, and cognitive.

Most people need to learn two things about writing: how to make it natural, and how to organize it. I was taught by outstanding writing teachers: write first, organize later. This is how I work with my students.

Tutoring is all about communication. I can take complex, forbidding material and break it down in different ways, until the light goes on.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a Ph.D. in Psychology. I have studied ADHD at the graduate level, including working in the lab of Dr. Jeffrey Halperin (a noted expert on ADHD) at Queens College. I have taught about ADHD at the college level, doing a 2-week module on it when teaching about child behavior disorders. I have worked with approximately 70 children with ADHD in private practice, using a proprietary remediation system called PACE.

Dyslexia

I have a Ph.D. in Psychology. I have done neuropsychological testing for learning disorders during a one-year externship at the NYU Child Study Center. I have taught about all types of specific learning disorders (including dyslexia) at the college level, doing a 1- to 2-week module on it when teaching about child behavior disorders. I have worked with approximately 25 children with ADHD in private practice, using a proprietary remediation system called PACE.

Phonics

I have tutored dozens of children in phonics using a program similar to Orton-Gillingham. During a neuropsychology externship at the NYU Child Study Center I administered and interpreted a broad range of language tests, which ranged from phonics to reading comprehension. Finally, I have read extensively in the research on reading, including its underlying cognitive processes and neurobiology.

Study Skills

I have tutored dozens of children in exercises that build attention and executive functioning (using a proprietary program called PACE). I worked in an ADHD research lab at Queens College for 2 years. I have taught mnemonics to many of my undergraduate students as well as to tutoring students. I have taught learning theory at the undergraduate level and am able to apply its tenets in real-life situations.

Writing

I have helped my college students with their application essays many times. I have also taught writing-intensive courses in experimental psychology. I have tutored the mechanics of writing (grammar, spelling, vocabulary, usage, etc.) with about a dozen elementary and middle school children. I wrote a 130 page dissertation, so I am experienced with organizing and completing theses. And I got an 800 on my GRE Verbal.

Bill is great

The first tutoring class went great. I am now more familiar with the material being taught at my class. Thank you so much for being patient and for focusing on the material I needed to know.
