About Lauren

Now available all year long (including the summer!). I'm also available for ONLINE tutoring sessions as well!

I currently hold a Professional Teaching License for NY State in ELA grades 7-12. Additionally, I teach college English at various colleges in New York, including one of the City University of New York colleges and one of the State University of New York colleges. I am fluent in both MLA and APA formatting. I have been tutoring students since 1995 and the more I tutor, the more I learn about what students need in terms of instruction. As a tutor, I have worked with a diverse student body with diverse student needs and I promise that I will be able to accommodate everyone. Yes, that means I will tutor students with disabilities! I think that often tutors forget that the job is not just about the money; I take a student-centered approach, hoping that the outcome will include some learning, growth, and development of skills. I guarantee that this experience will not be a waste of time or money!

My rates are negotiable based on the services requested and travel time. Since online tutoring sessions do not require travel, the rates for these sessions are always less. Here are my usual rates:

MANDATORY ASSESSMENTS (15-60 minutes) for all students - FREE (this session allows me to gauge the kind of services I will need to provide for you based on your individual needs and abilities - I cannot and will not tutor you without this).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I can help you prepare for the ACT Reading Section.

ADD/ADHD

I have an extensive background working with students with ADD and ADHD. I am not going to cure a student, but I will provide them with effective coping tools that will help them perform to their potential academically. This means that I can help them organize their ideas, keep them focused, and provide a style of tutoring that fits their needs.

Dyslexia

My training has allowed me to specialize in focusing with students with special needs on training them how to be students, studying for exams, coping with stress, advance their reading and writing skills. I have worked with many dyslexic students before and have reached optimum success with each of them.

What makes me qualified? Well, I was a undergraduate psychology major who focused on human services, school psychology, and urban education. Later on, I received extensive training with students who have special needs. Years ago, I was a Special Ed teacher for a middle school, where learned to fully deal with students who were having issues.

I understand students with dyslexia and I am able to help them.

English

My certification is in ELA 7-12 but I am qualified to also teach college students (as I am currently a college professor).

Let me help you with your English classes!

Grammar

The most common errors I find during essay revisions with students is their use of grammar. Most students struggle with grammar usage all the time, but they don't necessarily understand why certain phrasing is wrong.

I can help clear up those issues and help a student do better not only with their writing, but their speaking as well.

Literature

Literature is often an are where most students struggle; how to look within a text and interpret its meaning is something that can present a challenge if you're not aware of what you're looking for.

I've been teaching literature for grades 7-12 and for the college level for over a decade. Let me help you with these texts!

Macintosh

I have been using a Mac since the older designs were created in the 80's (not the first design sorry) and am very comfortable with all things Mac. I can help you!

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is a program I use every day in my life. I have used it for school and work purposes and I find it great for making presentations. I have even held training sessions at work and school to help my colleagues (even my professors!) make their presentations stand out. For the students I tutor, I work at a pace that fits our needs and depending on this determines the number of sessions that are needed for your training. Generally speaking though 2-3 sessions are all that it takes. $44/hour - negotiable.

Microsoft Word

I use Microsoft Word (all formats) every day, whether it be for typing my papers for grad class or using it to create documents at work. In the past, I have had to teach my colleagues how to make the best of Microsoft Word in order for them to create better documents. For my students, I generally start off slow, depending on their level of familiarity. Microsoft Word requires at least 4-5 sessions, depending on level and progress. $44/hour - negotiable.

Proofreading

Having trouble editing those papers? Need an extra eye to gloss over your work? Having trouble with the proofreading section of your English exams? Well I'm here to help!

As an ELA 7-12 certified educator and college lecturer, proofreading is an area that I am all too familiar with. I myself have written many articles and stories that have had to be proofread, so I am familiar with this process.

Let me help you with your proofreading needs!
$35 per essay that is under 7 pages. $5 per page after that.

Reading

Struggling with the reading section of those major exams? Having trouble with reading in general?

Let me help!

Regents

Studying for the Regents can be a real drag. I have worked with students on practice exams and have given them many useful test taking tips I guarantee my services will help you succeed!

Areas of tutoring include:

Practice Questions
Writing
English Regents
English AP Regents

Other regents areas available upon your request.

SAT Reading

Having trouble with the Reading section of the SAT? I have tutored many students for this exam and for the Writing SAT and they've all benefited from each session they've had with me. I can make your child more confident in their test taking skills and prepare them to do well on the exam.

Special Needs

I was a undergraduate psychology major who focused on human services, school psychology, and urban education. Later on, I received extensive training with students who have special needs. Years ago, I was a Special Ed teacher for a middle school, where learned to fully deal with students who were having issues.

My training has allowed me to specialize in focusing with students with special needs on training them how to be students, studying for exams, coping with stress, advance their reading and writing skills.

Spelling

Having trouble with spelling tests? Let me tutor you!

I am offering services in:

Practicing Spelling
Root Words
Spelling Bee preparation
Pronunciation

Many other services available up on your request.

Study Skills

Having trouble studying for exams? Need some test prep ideas? Want to learn to make an outline or organize yourself for a test? I can help. I can teach students of all age groups to prepare for their exams - no matter what subject they are in!

TEAS

Are you a potential nursing student who needs to take the TEAS for entry into or exit from a nursing program? This exam is very similar to the CLEP and Teacher Certification exams, both of which I have prepared students for with great success. Not only that, I have taken these exams myself and have done very well (I aced all three teacher exams!). Let me help you with the English-related sections of the exam so that you are better prepared for the exam.

Vocabulary

Somewhere along the lines of reading and comprehension comes a struggle due to problems with vocabulary.

I have tutored many students in vocabulary and have increased their understanding of words, but also their spelling and reading comprehension have improved. Let me help you or your child.

Writing

Writing happens to be the area where I excel and so let me use my expertise to help you with all of your writing needs.

Here are just some of the areas I can help in terms of writing:

ACT English
SAT Writing
College Essay Writing
Literature Writing (and Analysis)
Fiction or Non-Fiction Writing

And much, much more!

Excellently!! — Lauren helped me write a college essay. She taught me how to organize my paragraphs with an outline and we brain-stormed together. She came to the lesson prepared with print outs about the topic and she helped me develop my thought and ideas. I know I did very well on this assignment and I highly recommend her! ...
