About Lauren

Now available all year long (including the summer!). I'm also available for ONLINE tutoring sessions as well!

I currently hold a Professional Teaching License for NY State in ELA grades 7-12. Additionally, I teach college English at various colleges in New York, including one of the City University of New York colleges and one of the State University of New York colleges. I am fluent in both MLA and APA formatting. I have been tutoring students since 1995 and the more I tutor, the more I learn about what students need in terms of instruction. As a tutor, I have worked with a diverse student body with diverse student needs and I promise that I will be able to accommodate everyone. Yes, that means I will tutor students with disabilities! I think that often tutors forget that the job is not just about the money; I take a student-centered approach, hoping that the outcome will include some learning, growth, and development of skills. I guarantee that this experience will not be a waste of time or money!

My rates are negotiable based on the services requested and travel time. Since online tutoring sessions do not require travel, the rates for these sessions are always less. Here are my usual rates:

MANDATORY ASSESSMENTS (15-60 minutes) for all students - FREE (this session allows me to gauge the kind of services I will need to provide for you based on your individual needs and abilities - I cannot and will not tutor you without this).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I can help you prepare for the ACT Reading Section.

ADD/ADHD

I have an extensive background working with students with ADD and ADHD. I am not going to cure a student, but I will provide them with effective coping tools that will help them perform to their potential academically. This means that I can help them organize their ideas, keep them focused, and provide a style of tutoring that fits their needs.

College Counseling

Get expert college advise from a college professor. I can go through the application process with you, help you with that college entrance essay, and give you tips for the best interview practices. I can even show you how to organize for your future or current college classes.

$15 per hour for advisement sessions.
$30 per hour for college essay writing sessions.

Other services and other service rates may be available upon your request.

Dyslexia

My training has allowed me to specialize in focusing with students with special needs on training them how to be students, studying for exams, coping with stress, advance their reading and writing skills. I have worked with many dyslexic students before and have reached optimum success with each of them.

What makes me qualified? Well, I was a undergraduate psychology major who focused on human services, school psychology, and urban education. Later on, I received extensive training with students who have special needs. Years ago, I was a Special Ed teacher for a middle school, where learned to fully deal with students who were having issues.

I understand students with dyslexia and I am able to help them.

Elementary (K-6th)

For over 12 years I have worked with elementary school students on many of the important skills they need to learn. Areas I have worked with include:

ELA and State Exam Prep
Class subjects (Math, Spelling, Writing, Grammar, Reading, Computers, and History)
General Reading Skills
Organizational skills

Other areas are available upon your request. Your child will feel confident as they acquire the necessary skills they need at their grade level!

English

My certification is in ELA 7-12 but I am qualified to also teach college students (as I am currently a college professor).

Let me help you with your English classes!

Grammar

The most common errors I find during essay revisions with students is their use of grammar. Most students struggle with grammar usage all the time, but they don't necessarily understand why certain phrasing is wrong.

I can help clear up those issues and help a student do better not only with their writing, but their speaking as well.

Literature

Literature is often an are where most students struggle; how to look within a text and interpret its meaning is something that can present a challenge if you're not aware of what you're looking for.

I've been teaching literature for grades 7-12 and for the college level for over a decade. Let me help you with these texts!

Microsoft Access

Almost every job I've had in my lifetime has required me to use Microsoft Access as a database to hold company information. I have been part of several training groups where I have been in charge of teaching Microsoft Access to other employees. For the most part, learning Access is experimental, but there are certain skills that one needs to have beforehand. My job is to make sure you have acquired what you need to in order to build Access to your needs. 2-3 hour sessions are usually needed. $44/hour - negotiable.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is a program I use every day in my life. I have used it for school and work purposes and I find it great for making presentations. I have even held training sessions at work and school to help my colleagues (even my professors!) make their presentations stand out. For the students I tutor, I work at a pace that fits our needs and depending on this determines the number of sessions that are needed for your training. Generally speaking though 2-3 sessions are all that it takes. $44/hour - negotiable.

Microsoft Word

I use Microsoft Word (all formats) every day, whether it be for typing my papers for grad class or using it to create documents at work. In the past, I have had to teach my colleagues how to make the best of Microsoft Word in order for them to create better documents. For my students, I generally start off slow, depending on their level of familiarity. Microsoft Word requires at least 4-5 sessions, depending on level and progress. $44/hour - negotiable.

Proofreading

Having trouble editing those papers? Need an extra eye to gloss over your work? Having trouble with the proofreading section of your English exams? Well I'm here to help!

As an ELA 7-12 certified educator and college lecturer, proofreading is an area that I am all too familiar with. I myself have written many articles and stories that have had to be proofread, so I am familiar with this process.

Let me help you with your proofreading needs!

$25 per essay that is under 7 pages. $5 per page after that.

Public Speaking

I have given many speeches before and have worked closely with students in the past to ensure they are fully prepared to make presentations. My former speech professor has even had me come to her classroom many times to speak to her students and has recommended me to other clients.

I have worked with High School Speeches, Debates, College Speech Class, Presentations, and preparing for job interviews.

Gain confidence in speaking to a public audience with my help!

Sociology

Sociology can be a tough course to get through if you are unfamiliar with the terminology and the research that surrounds the different areas of this field. I have taken many courses in sociology and have done very well in all of them. I have actually been recommended by my former professors to tutor their current students.

Areas of Specialty:
Sociology101
Family Sociology
Sociological Foundations and Concepts

Special Needs

I was a undergraduate psychology major who focused on human services, school psychology, and urban education. Later on, I received extensive training with students who have special needs. Years ago, I was a Special Ed teacher for a middle school, where learned to fully deal with students who were having issues.

My training has allowed me to specialize in focusing with students with special needs on training them how to be students, studying for exams, coping with stress, advance their reading and writing skills.

Speech

I used to have trouble speaking in public and wanted to gain confidence in my every day conversations. It wasn't until I practiced with a tutor and took a speech class that I found my voice. Now I give speeches all the time and I stand up every day in front of a class and lecture without any problems.

Now, I am here to help others write speeches, work on finding their voice in public speaking, outlining, presenting, and even help with those tricky interview skills.

TEAS

Are you a potential nursing student who needs to take the TEAS for entry into or exit from a nursing program? This exam is very similar to the CLEP and Teacher Certification exams, both of which I have prepared students for with great success. Not only that, I have taken these exams myself and have done very well (I aced all three teacher exams!). Let me help you with the English-related sections of the exam so that you are better prepared for the exam.

Theatre

Performing in a play and having trouble getting prepared for the role? Need more direction? Need an acting coach or partner to help you with those lines? Having trouble understanding a play? Need help writing a play? Or do you have a script that you are working on that needs an extra set of eyes or an actor to help see how it plays out? Let me be that person to help you. As someone who has taught drama, acted, and written plays, I know of the struggles in the theater. Therefore, let me share in this experience with you and help guide you through it!

$10 per hour.

Vocabulary

Somewhere along the lines of reading and comprehension comes a struggle due to problems with vocabulary.

I have tutored many students in vocabulary and have increased their understanding of words, but also their spelling and reading comprehension have improved. Let me help you or your child.
