About Michelle

Teaching is truly my passion. From teaching social studies to pre- algebra, I believe that every learner has the potential to be a great student. It is my job to help them find the best way to learn and express themselves. I have worked with a wide range of learning styles, including ASD and ADHD students. My classroom is guided by my training in Responsive Classroom and PAF (Preventing Academic Failure).

I have my Masters in Museum and Elementary Educations; awarded by Bank Street College of Education in 2007. Since then I have been employed by Stevens Cooperative School in Hoboken, NJ as a 3rd/4th grade teachers, worked as an Media Arts Teaching Artist for the New York City Public schools and, for the last 3 years worked as an 3rd grade teacher for Poughkeepsie Day School. I am trained in PAF, Responsive Classroom and will be completing the Windward Summer Teacher's Institute this month for work with Literacy Based Learning Disorders.

As a third grade teacher, with Special Education training, I teach both cursive and remedial handwriting to my students daily. I use a variety of programs, but have been trained and use Handwriting Without Tears the most. In addition I have OT training in use of hand strengthen exercises and practices for students with grapho-motor skills concerns.

When teaching and tutoring, I use a variety of "tools", music, poetry, art and technology to reach my students. We "construct" our learning through hands on inquiry based learning experiences. Reading activities may include creating board games or dramatic play. Math may include reading picture books and using corn or beans to make counting maps. I see learning as a journey and would love to help you find your way.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
