Hi there! My name is Shane and I am looking to tutor some students. I am a former English teacher who has taught students in high school as well as middle school. As a high school teacher, I taught English Literature, American Literature, speech and communication to 9th, 10th, and 12th graders. As a middle school teacher, I taught English Language Arts and social studies at the 5th and 6th grade level for the past 12 years. I am knowledgeable in the reading and writing standards that you need to know for the current school year.
My tutoring methods are much like my teaching methods in that I make it understandable and approachable. I get across what needs to be learned while helping you make connections to your work. A student must be able to make connections to their writing and what they are learning in order to get more out of it. I break down the writing into paragraphs and look at key concepts first before worrying about usage and spelling mistakes. I will make the writing process more enjoyable and more accessible. If you are someone with vocabulary weaknesses, I can work with you at breaking down the process of learning new words.
I am an avid reader who likes all kinds of novels, especially drama, thrillers, science fiction, and fantasy. I collect comic books and find that some of the best themes are found in superhero stories such as the X-men. I am also a big movie fan with my favorite movies being ones that are strong on character and story, just like in novels. These are the two most important things to have in any novel or movie. If you don't have characters to care about or a story to be excited about, you don't have anything.
In addition to being a teacher, I have also been a soccer coach and love coaching new skills and drills to my players. I look at both coaching and teaching in the same way. I want you to get the most out of your time with me and want you to enjoy what you are doing. I am dedicated to help you build more confidence in your writing and to help you achieve academic success. Hi there! My name is Shane and I am looking to tutor some students. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught public speaking to high school seniors, assessing their speech and communication skills through a number of assignments. I have also taught communication skills to 5th and 6th graders. I have graded their oral book reports, group projects, and demonstration lessons.
I have coached soccer at the little league, travel, and modified levels for the past 10 years. My little league teams averaged 2 or fewer losses a season and my modified teams went 25-7 over three seasons. I focus on three aspects: teamwork, conditioning, and ball skills (dribbling, passing, shooting).
I taught study skills every year I taught 5th and 6th grade English Language Arts. Such topics I focused on included test-taking skills, listening skills, and following oral/written directions. I had my students use different methods such as process of elimination and we looked at different types of test questions including multiple choice, short answer, and true/false.
