About Amy

Hello! I am happy to work with all people, any age, interested in improving their Spanish language skills, English language skills or any basic education skills. I've worked with students from kindergarten through adulthood in a variety of settings, including the classroom, homeschooling, and in adult education programs. I absolutely love teaching!

I earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University at Albany in Albany, NY. My undergraduate degree is in the Spanish language with a focus on linguistics and Latin American studies. My graduate degree focused on education and specifically how to teach languages. I also took some classes on teaching reading.

During my undergraduate studies, I attended college at the Universidad de Chile and it was through that experience that I became fluent in Spanish.

If you need help with Spanish, English, or basic education skills for any age K-adult, please contact me!

Thank you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

NYS certification in teaching ESOL K-12 allows me to also work with any student who needs help with any basic instruction K-12.

I have experience teaching AIS (Academic Intervention Services) classes in a public school in NYS. In that class I worked with native English speaking children who needed help with math and reading.

I have taught pre-reading and pre- math skills in Kindergarten

I teach literature appreciation in all of my classes.

I teach basic math skills (number recognition through pre-algebra) in all of my classes.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Master's of Education degree in teaching English to English language learners, and I have several years of experience. It is my favorite subject to teach, along with reading.

Reading

I have had 15 years of teaching experience at all levels. I have a Masters of Science in Teaching English as a Second Language, and have had experience with the Reading Recovery Program.

Spanish

I have several years experience teaching Spanish and I am permanently certified in NYS as a teacher of Spanish in grades 7-12 and I have a professional teacher's license in Florida for teaching Spanish K-12. My B.A. is in Spanish with a major focus on Latin American Studies and Linguistics.

Study Skills

In order to help a student learn study skills, I first try to understand the person. Then, I help the student learn how to plan and prepare for what they need to do. Much of it has to do with getting organized and learning how to maintain it. Maintaining organization requires practice over time. Eventually, habits can and will change, as long as the change is in alignment with the personality and learning style of the student.
