As a certified special education teacher I have taught every grade level from first through high school, in both regular and special education classrooms. I've tutored in one-on-one and group sessions in math, English, writing, and some high school science classes (Life science, Earth Science). I have helped students pass regents exams in algebra, geometry, and English. I have taught reading classes, and have had specialized training in various phonics programs such as Wilson and Orton-Gillingham. I maintain an easy relationship with my students, and am often told that I explain things in a way that helps the student understand for the first time. I love teaching, and love to see my students succeed.

I have additional training in both the Orton-Gillingham and Wilson methods of multi-sensory reading instruction. These learning strategies draw heavily on phonics instruction. I have used these methods in teaching special education reading classes at the high school level, with students whose reading level was as low as third grade. I also spent several years teaching elementary grades in private schools which used a strong, phonics-based curriculum.

Writing

In my years of teaching, I have provided writing instruction to countless students. This includes grammar and paragraph writing for the younger students, and formal essay and creative writing for secondary students. There are many elements that go into good writing, from writing an outline for organizational purposes, through writing a rough draft and then finalizing it by fixing errors and improving vocabulary. I am a writer myself. Although I have never sought to be published, I enjoy writing fiction and poetry, and have always been able to express myself clearly and concisely. I enjoy passing those skills on to my students.

Great organization, communication, and patience!

Diane has been wonderful about communicating directly with my daughter's teachers to make sure they are covering the work required for her to receive full credit for a missed term. Diane is very organized - important because of limited amount of time to complete this work! I also really appreciate her flexibility in meeting locations - when the local library is closed, they have had to spend two hours at picnic tables in the woods! I must also compliment Diane on how she is handling a grumpy, non-motivated teenager. My daughter is actually getting up to meet with her without my dragging her out of bed! Yahoo!
