My greatest joy is seeing the flicker of understanding touch a child's eyes. When I hear a child make a connection to what I'm teaching, I know I'm doing something right. I entered the education field with a deep desire to make a difference. During the time I taught fourth and fifth grade I gained the most satisfaction when my students wanted to come to class. Whenever there came a break for holidays my students would moan. Sometimes I felt as not many of them had anyone who really listened to what they were thinking. I sincerely believe that when one loves what they do it shows.
I went back to school after raising my family and with a 4.0 average and honors I became certified in elementary education. Soon after I completed my masters in literacy. (also with a 4.0 average) I was recruited to become a fourth grade teacher before I finished school.
The last four years I have been working in a Pre-K to grade 2 school where Common Core is the curriculum. Working in all the grades I have established myself as solid, proficient teacher.
During my time as a fourth and fifth grade teacher, my students ranked in the top 5% in all state tests. They also won the yearly spelling bees. I worked at this time as a morning and lunchtime tutor for students needing extra help before testing. After school hours I conducted an Achieve program that integrated art, music and sports.
I believe my own love of reading helps to motivate my students. I aim to ignite their interest in many subjects in order to encourage them to look for more, seek answers, develop questions. I paste inspirational quotes all over the classroom to relay ideas of people they admire.
