I enjoy working with elementary, high-school and college students who need help with any aspect of writing, reading, or written comprehension, including SAT and ACT prep and review, college-application essays, college papers, and ESOL reading, writing and comprehension.
For many people, writing is difficult. With my help, you will find it far easier to develop topics for your essays and papers, conduct research, and organize your writing so that you make strong, well-substantiated arguments. Working with me, you will soon create stellar papers and essays that are written in clear language, have a strong thesis, and use proper spelling, punctuation and grammar. Even better is that writing will seem easier -- and more enjoyable -- than ever before!
As a tutor, I am smart, funny and fun to work with, but I am goal oriented and will see that your work improves quickly and with the least amount of stress. You'll learn what's important, what's not, and how to know the difference for every assignment. In short, you will learn HOW to learn. We will use your time wisely and shoot for the best possible grades. But my focus isn't only on your grades. When your skills grow, so does your confidence, and good grades are the natural outcome.
I have lots of experience with students in intro and mid-level college English classes, many of whom are ESOL students. Some of my students have no writing experience at all. They start out lost, but after working with me for only a few weeks, they've done a "one-eighty!" and are consistently writing well. My students show lasting improvement in the areas we target, as well as improvement in their confidence, focus, and comprehension, and more interest in their studies overall.
Me? Before moving to Columbia County (NY) in 2006, I lived in New York City for 25 years where I was a magazine writer and editor and nonprofit communications director. At nearby Berkshire Community College, I tutored students enrolled in English and Writing courses for several years (and was nominated for Tutor of the Year in 2011). Currently, I tutor ESOL students through Literacy Volunteers of Berkshire County, and write articles about culture and the arts for regional and national publications. My son is studying for the SATs. He has very much enjoyed working with Shawn. He relates well to her and is comfortable. She has done an excellent job with his vocabulary and writing skills. He has said that his lesson time goes by very quickly and he is learning and feeling confident with his abilities. My son has given Shawn the highest of praises saying "I wish I had teachers like Shawn". I am very thankful for all of Shawn's efforts and highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I currently teach ESOL students of all ages. Certification is pending.
There are three equally important "keys" to giving a good presentation: preparation (you need to know your subject), confidence (you need to be "the expert," at least for the duration of the presentation), and warmth (you need to engage your audience with a friendly delivery that keeps them engaged).
I can help in all three areas. There's no substitute for knowing your subject, and organizing your talk so it's interesting to others. Then, we'll practice your delivery so your audience stays interested. The rest is finding your own style. Your warmth will come through once you know your subject and have the confidence to talk about it to a group. I can help you develop your presentation and the skills you need to deliver it successfully.
