In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took piano lessons for 12 years during which time I focused on learning the classics but also learned music theory. At age 17, I participated in the NYSSMA Festival and received an A rating on Level 6 (highest level) while performing Chopin's Fantasie Impromtu. Also at age 17, I gave a recital, playing music from Bach, Brahms, Haydn, Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy, which was 90 minutes of memorized music. In college, I was a music minor. I have taught piano for almost 40 years, with about 35 students of all ages and levels, and have references readily available.
