No two students learn new skills in exactly the same way. My name is Joe, and I am passionate about finding the most effective approach for each student. Pages of reviews from adult learners, as well as lesson samples and observation reports from classroom teaching, are available upon request. I have worked as a teacher at all levels from pre-K through early college calculus and algebra. Most of my experience is working with pre-algebra, algebra, calculus, trigonometry, and SAT Prep, full time at the middle/high school level for a city school district in upstate NY, from 2007-2013. Since then, I have been teaching math at Empire State College, mostly with accomplished, working adults who describe math as their most difficult subject. My work in calculus and trig has been through tutoring and substitute teaching.
I have a Master of Science for Teachers degree in Childhood Education. I also have a Bachelor’s Degree with dual majors in Mathematics and Statistics, and Philosophy.
All students are different, and learn in different ways. I specialize in working with students that are having trouble with the way their primary instructor presents information. My strongest area is helping students scoring at a low level on tests to score at a much higher level. This is very common, because classroom instructors often do not have the resources or background to reach each individual student’s potential. Most of my teaching experience is:
- middle to high school math; general number sense and graphing, pre-algebra, algebra, trig, stats, and calculus.
- SAT Prep for math, working for a city school district for six spring seasons
- early college (“I need this class to graduate!”)
Communication and tutoring go hand in hand! Don’t be shy! I have lightning fast response times, so just be careful you don’t get whiplash after you send me a message.
NOTE: I will only speak with students 17 and over, or parents.
