About Skyelar

Bio

Hi there, I'm Skyelar! I'm a trained vocalist and composer, and I'm here to help you love music as much as I do (if that's even possible!)
I've always loved teaching and tutoring, from helping my friends with their homework in elementary school to tutoring music theory in college. Even though I don't have an education certification, I've studied education and pedagogy, and my first priority is always helping you with whatever you're struggling with. I've always loved teaching and tutoring, from helping my friends with their homework in elementary school to tutoring music theory in college. Even though I don't have an education certification, I've studied education and pedagogy, and my first priority is always helping you with whatever you're struggling with. My goal as a teacher is to help you be less confused, more confident, and just as excited about learning music as I am. I'll meet you where you're at – whatever you're having trouble with or curious about, and we'll work together to get you the knowledge and skills you need.

When it comes to composing, my academic focus is on the contemporary: electronic music, contemporary small ensemble pieces, and experimental choir music. But I've been a songwriter since I was eight, and I'll always love lyrics and chords! Composition was my main focus in undergrad, so I have a good breadth of knowledge. We can learn about what you want to learn about!
As a singer, my favorite genre is musical theater, but I've worked with pieces from all over the place - from contemporary classical (one of my favorite pieces to sing is the Habanera from Carmen) to a cappella. I'm comfortable with anything, and I want you to sing what you want to sing.
I'm one of the few music students who'll tell you that music theory is AMAZING instead of complaining about it. It's pretty mathematical, but the way the notes come together on the page is nothing short of magical. Even though it wasn't my main focus, I have a good working knowledge of Roman numeral analysis, counterpoint, and classical forms. My favorite is the sonata!

Whether you're trying to do better in a tough theory class, want to expand your singing range, or you just want to write some songs together, I'm the tutor for you! I adore music, and I think you will, too.
So let's make some music together!

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I studied composition at an esteemed liberal arts college for four years. I took classes in electronic composition, ensemble composition, vocal composition, and solo composition lessons. My senior thesis was a contemporary composition piece for a six-voice ensemble, in three movements, and I'm happy to provide a link to my work if you'd like to check it out!

Ear Training,

Ear Training

As the Music Theory TA, half of my job was tutoring the ear training class in solfege, dictation, and sight singing. I also have ten years of voice training, which included ear training. I've been learning music by ear since I was four (my first instrument was the Zimbabwean marimba, which is taught entirely by ear).
Music Theory,

Music Theory

Even though my degree is in composition, I've studied all sorts of theory, from Roman numerals to form analysis. I worked for my college's music department as a theory TA, teaching intro theory and ear training/dictation. I'm one of those weird musicians who actually likes theory, so I'm happy to help you with any theory questions you have!
Songwriting,

Songwriting

As a composition student at Carleton College, I focused on songwriting in my solo composition lessons. I wrote music primarily for piano and my own voice, but I also included electronic music (and production) in my work. If you're interested, I'm happy to direct you to my portfolio so you can check out the type of music I write!
Voice (Music)

Voice (Music)

I started voice lessons ten years ago and have continued studying voice since then. I have studied classical technique as well as contemporary singing styles. I also formed and directed an a cappella group for four years, which involved instruction and teaching of the group members. I've loved singing for as long as I can remember, and my goal is to help you love it, too!

great intro lesson

My daughter was so nervous about this lesson but enjoyed it. Skyelar made it an easy introduction. I feel confident my daughter won't need/want me in the room for support in the future.

Patient and fun

My daughter is super shy but she had the best time with skyelar and is looking forward to next week! They sang some songs and got to know one another and skyelar was very patient but also made sure indie knew what was expected of her

She is the best!

Skyelar is a really wonderful singing/music teacher. She stays up to date with technology in order to give you the most seamless experience possible. She really has a strong grasp of how to teach music virtually. Skyelar is clearly extremely knowledgable about music and has lots to share with her students! If her suggestion doesn’t work for you, she knows right away and gives you something else. She is very good at adapting to a student’s needs. One of the most important things in a student/teacher relationship is to have a safe space, especially with singing in my opinion. Skyelar is so gentle with her students, I always feel like a rockstar in her class and I am never afraid or embarrassed to get something wrong. That being said, she does not shy away from giving you constructive feedback, it’s just that she knows how to do it in a way that empowers you rather than crushes you. I always feel confident and happy with my voice after a lesson with her. It is one of the highlights of my week and puts me in a great mood.
