B.A.-Humboldt State University (Education)
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education with a Minor in Psychology. Upon completing college and having spent time in classrooms in California, I realized that what I really wanted to do was to work with students one-on-one. I feel that it has become increasingly difficult for students to receive the educational assistance that they need and deserve in this climate of overcrowded schools and low education budgets. Whereas working with and teaching a single student allows for each lesson plan to be specifically tailored to his or her needs, thus helping them to achieve better grades and, I think most importantly, a better understanding of the subject.
I have worked with students who have a tough time communicating and become easily frustrated when having a difficult time with the material. My background in psychology and in education has allowed me to help students to learn patience with themselves and with the learning process. I try to instill in them the idea that all learning is of benefit to them, that it isn't just about getting the grade or passing the test, though of course that is the goal. I encourage questions and will keep working to find new ways of imparting the information until your child has gained comprehension and is able to complete the task at hand to everyone's satisfaction.
Having taken and passed the ACT myself, I have experience and can help prepare students to take the ACT themselves. I have always enjoyed and excelled in language arts, and have been awarded recognition for my writing. I have written for my high school, college and local newspapers, as well. I am proficient in proofreading for spelling, grammar and punctuation and in the organization of essays and the like.
I feel that tutoring is beneficial to both student and tutor; it is a relationship built on reliance and trust and it is therefore imperative that your child feels comfortable and able to learn with his/her tutor. I am patient and kind but also take your child's education seriously, and so will be meticulous and firm when it comes to the completion of lessons and homework. I truly look forward to working with your child and welcome you to contact me with any questions you may have or to arrange a time to meet with me so that you can best determine if I'm the best candidate to meet your needs. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
