Hello, my name is Maria. I am an elementary school teacher living in Queens, New York. I am a graduate of The Hunter College Graduate School of Education. I received my Bachelors Degree from NYU, with a major in Journalism. After graduating from NYU, I worked on several documentaries, where I developed strong questioning skills which I apply to my teaching and tutoring today. I left my documentary career to stay home with my children. I have always been passionate about different ways children learn. I went back to school to become an Elementary School teacher and love teaching.
Tutoring gives me the opportunity to continue to work one to one improving skills students are struggling in. Particularly, in reading comprehension, math problem solving, and writing coherently. I am a trained reading specialist and find it very rewarding to see students confidence grow as they learn. I have taught every grade level from PreK through fifth grade. I have tutored students in ELA and Math standardized tests. My philosophy in tutoring is to support learners to understand the material, not to get through it.

I have experience teaching students math test prep and problem solving skills. This ties into reading as it includes understanding key words. My qualifications are not limited to test prep. I have taught all elementary grade levels in math. I use acronyms, visual models, mental math to help students understand math in their individualized way.

My personal goal is to help my clients meet their own goals in learning. I have a flexible schedule and always respond quickly. I encourage students or parents to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson.

Great with Young Kids and ELA

Maria worked with my six-year-old who is in 2nd grade on ELA concepts. She evaluated his reading level and has helped me chart a course for him to do at home. She is very patient and great with young kids.

My daughter really liked her (10)

My daughter is shy but she had no problem with her. She knows what she is doing and make my daughter feel comfortable. We like to regularly see her for math help. We had 2 classes and I'm looking forward to the next ones.

Very experienced at teaching math to young kids

I am a graduate mathematician and most my college friends work as math teachers, so I can compare. My impression is that Maria is very experienced at teaching young children and she immediately sees their strength and weaknesses. She also has a good way of structuring knowledge beyond the curriculum approach.
