My name is Allison and I have my Master's in Childhood Education and my Bachelor's in Illustration. I am NYS certified to teach grades 1-6 and also have my TEFL/TESOL certification. I was born and raised in Queens and have just returned home after 4 years teaching abroad. I lived in Rome for two years, teaching grades 3 and 4, and then moved to London where I taught English as an Additional Language (EAL). The schools I have worked in were both international schools, with a very diverse student body and a holistic approach to learning. Working with students from all over the world has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I have been exposed to a wide variety of teaching and learning styles and am well-equipped to differentiate to meet the needs of all my students.
I love working one-on-one with students because I feel that I have the chance to get to know the student and help build confidence. I chose to be a teacher because it is the most worthwhile way for me to spend my time. I love learning with my students and discovering new and better ways to help them achieve their goals.
I taught elementary math for 3 years and have been exposed to a variety of teaching methods which help children understand the mathematical concepts, rather than simply repeating a series of steps.
I have always excelled in English grammar and am really enthusiastic and passionate about language. I learned Italian through full immersion and understand all the challenges of being in a foreign country with very little knowledge of the language. I am aware of all the encouragement and support that is needed when learning a new language.
I have always had a passion and talent for drawing. I majored in Art for about 8 years and am knowledgeable in figure and portrait drawing, as well as any other drawings from life. I am particularly skilled in pencil and charcoal, but have experience working with all other media.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about my availability. I look forward to hearing from you and working to achieve the goals you we set. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was an art major throughout high school and obtained a 4-year art scholarship to St. John's University. I majored in Illustration and Fine Art for the next 4 years, drawing all kinds of subject matter from life (i.e. figure/portrait drawings, still lives, landscapes and perspective). I also took advantage of my university's study abroad program and went to study art in France and Italy.
Lessons I teach would be focused on how to compose a drawing through measurements and free sketching, as well as the importance of light and shadow using pencil and charcoal, cross hatch and line. Every lesson I teach would involve modeling a particular skill.
I am very passionate about art and eager to share my knowledge and expertise with others.
