Students learn well with me because I look for the basic information or skill that may be missing for success. If assignments or goals aren't being accomplished to satisfaction because, for example, the student is "not strong in verbs," I check to see if he or she understands not just verbs but what verbs do along with what all the other words in a sentence are doing. We'll look at how all the kinds of words (parts of speech) work together to convey meaning, particularly the meaning you want them to convey. The approach may sound confusing, but it's not, or at least it's much less confusing than continually dealing with words or kinds of words on a one-by-one basis as in most of the textbook grammar exercises. It's easier to learn how all of a sentence works than to stay seemingly forever on how one part of it works. In writing, I often find that it's the thinking, the figuring out what to say, that's holding back progress. I have a master's degree in English from Fordham University. I have taught English and ESL for 25 years in schools, community colleges, and industrial training programs. As a result of working with my five children and now my grandson on the whole range of school work, I can usually help with other subjects as well. Beyond the high school level, however, I stick to English, ESL and writing. I have taught business writing at the world's largest oil company, Saudi Aramco, and at Long Island University. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
