LIU CW Post (Master's)
I am dedicated to helping students reach their maximum potential in ways that best meet their individual learning styles. I believe all students have the ability to learn when given the right tools do so. Therefore, as a teacher and tutor, I feel it is my job to work in collaboration with the students, parents, and when necessary, the classroom teacher, to create a learning environment in which the student can reach their maximum potential. I have worked as a Special Education Teacher in both public and private school settings for the past 4 years in many boroughs of NYC as well as Long Island. I have experience with many different reading and math curricula including Fundations, Fontas and Pinnell Benchmarking, Everyday Math, Envisions Math, and many others. I am flexible and reliable and will always give advance notice in the event that a session needs to be rescheduled. I am willing to tutor in Queens, Brooklyn (locations close to the Queens Border only), or Long Island (anywhere in Nassau County only). References are available on request.

Ilana has been tutoring my child who is in the 3rd grade for the ELA test about once a week for the last two months. She is responsible, reliable, knowledgeable, patient, and caring. She is always on time and prepared with materials that my child needs to learn. She leaves the completed materials with me so I can review it again with my child, and sends me progress reports of the sessions. It is easy to schedule appointments with her, because she responds to e-mail quickly. She is usually available at or around the time that we need and she has not missed any appointments. My child looks forward to Ilana's visit. I believe that my child has learned a lot of new information for the ELA test that was not covered in the public school. My child is taking the ELA test this week, so I am hoping for good news.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience working with students with ADD/ADHD in both public and private school settings. When provided breaks to take a walk, get a drink of water, or just stretch, I have found that these students are able to refocus their thoughts and succeed. In addition, working in a quiet environment with limited distractions has helped my students tremendously as well.
I have worked with students with Aspergers in classroom settings. Strategies such as repeating information, asking for the student to repeat directions, and constant redirection of student attention have proven successful for student achievement.

I have professional certification in Literacy B-Grade 6. In addition, I am familiar with the writers workshop model in place throughout NYC classrooms today. I have experience holding writers conferences with students to help them improve their writing and to be sure they are meeting the demands of the assignment. Furthermore, I have found much success with the use of graphic organizers such as venn diagrams, a 4 square, story maps, etc to allow students to organize their thoughts before writing a paragraph or essay. This allows students to put all of their information in a more visually appealing and easier to read format so they are ready to write a paragraph or essay after its completion.
