About Nicolette

Two years ago I embarked on an unknown journey that put me through many tests of sleepless nights, dedication, and yes - even stress! I entered my Graduate program at the University of Edinburgh in International Relations of the Middle East with Arabic. Not knowing any Arabic or having any formal experience in learning a language was certainly overwhelming, but through my program I gained the confidence, and more importantly, the skills - rapidly - to become advanced in the Arabic language (MSA & Egyptian dialect) today. I understand the hardships that come with learning another language, whether it be grammatical, pronunciation, or simply grasping a concept that is unfamiliar in English, and believe that I can relate with my past struggles. As part of this program, I have traveled and lived in Egypt (for 5 months during the Summer of 2015) in Cairo, undertaking intensive language classes, as well as attending cultural events, meeting with language partners, etc. which has provided an invaluable and certainly necessary experience in helping me learn more about Arabic and Middle Eastern culture and history.

Additionally, in my program (as it is a two-year program), we as students were required and encouraged to use the above years as resources to help us with Arabic - this ranged anywhere from interpreting, translating, essay-writing, preparing for exams, or practicing for oral presentations. Graduating from first-year students to second-year students, we were then required to provide the same tutoring services to the year below us! Tutoring and helping others in a difficult language can also help secure one's own knowledge of the material at hand. I hope to utilize some of these practices while tutoring my clients, as it is beneficial to talk things out to gain the confidence and understand the material fully. I am excited and highly interested in tutoring or teaching, specifically in Arabic or a field that requires me to engage with the Middle East/North African community. I believe I am well-versed in cultural and historical affairs, and have a newfound passion for learning languages, and want to help others achieve a goal or a dream to manage and learn a difficult language!

• MSc - International Relations of the Middle East with Arabic - The University of Edinburgh
• Study Abroad (part of Graduate program) in Cairo, Egypt for 5 months

Through my two-year intensive Graduate program at the University of Edinburgh, my peers and I have been extensively trained in the Arabic language - both MSA and various dialects. As part of my program, I have also received tutoring, as well as acted as a mentor for incoming students in the program. I am most comfortable with the Egyptian dialect, but am aware of other nuances in Levantine dialect. When I first entered the program, I did not know any Arabic at all (not even the alphabet!), and at the end of my two years, I am proud to say that I have achieved an advanced level in speaking, reading, writing, and listening in the language. I have also traveled extensively throughout the Middle East/North African region (both personally and part of school programs), and find these cultural experiences to be extremely valuable, helpful, and relatable when learning about a new language or culture!

I have also interned with an NGO - "Translators Without Borders" - translating weather reports and news articles to provide to refugees for free three times a week for six months from Arabic to English/English to Arabic.

As previous first-time student of language, I believe I can help those who are struggling to learn Arabic, or who seek intensive study/tutoring/help to rapidly accumulate their language skills. Arabic is a daunting language, but I am here to guide you through it!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
