About Stephen

I am a 24 year old male originally from East Hampton, NY. I grew up loving Romantic and High Fantasy works such as J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion or Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I've always had a love for anything that displays vivid imagination. I loved the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter growing up. Now I write and read lots and lots of poetry and have a penchant for English, Spanish, and Latin American poetry. I procured my B.A. in English at St. John's University in Jamaica, Queens as of December 2015. During my time as an undergraduate at St. John's I did an exchange program in Fall 2014 and studied at the Pontifical Catholic University in Chile taking courses on Golden Age Spanish Literature, Contemporary Latin American Poetry, and the History of Western Philosophy. I enjoyed my 6 months in Chile thoroughly and acquired a new relish for the lovely cadence of the Spanish language in that far-off mountainous region. During my years of undergraduate study I read abundantly in great works of literature and poetry mainly in the Western tradition from Antiquity to Postmodern. After graduation in December I worked home for a few months before travelling to Leon, Nicaragua to study at the International TEFL Academy to procure my TQUK Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (QCF). After 180 hours of coursework and 10 hours of teaching practice I accomplished this and returned to the U.S. After working in the service industry for another summer in my hometown of East Hampton I have returned to St. John's University to pursue an M.A. in Spanish having procured a Graduate Fellowship under the director of the program. I have very advanced knowledge of the Spanish language both in a practical sense: familiar with colloquialisms, idioms, slang, everyday speech and listening; as well as with the more academic approach: all grammar structures, linguistics, philology, etymology, etc. I'm kind, sensitive, patient, empathetic, compassionate, flexible, easy going, and passionate about teaching and learning.

I have studied the Spanish language formally in school from the time I was 11 years old. I studied Spanish through middle school, high school, and at various universities. I also worked at a construction company during my adolescence where I was part of a team of workers that were all from Cuenca, Ecuador and spoke little or no English. I thus worked about 50 hours a week during which time we carried on all communication in Spanish whether collaborating on work or chatting during down time, coffee breaks, and lunch hours. I've spent six months in Chile and two months in Nicaragua. Finally, I have a B.A. minor in Spanish from St. John's University (acquiring which I often took grad classes as an undergrad) and am currently pursuing an M.A. in Spanish with a graduate fellowship. I've read extensively in Spanish and Latin American Literature from the Middle Ages to Contemporary including authors such as Garcilaso de la Vega, Juan Boscan, Lope de Vega, Francisco de Quevedo, Luis de Gongora, Pedro Calderon de la Barca, Miguel de Cervantes, Ruben Dario, Cesar Vallejo, Vicente Huidobro, Gabriela Mistral, Pablo Neruda, Nicanor Parra, Jose Enrique Rodo, Ana Maria Matute, Horacio Quiroga, Isabel Allende, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez among others.

I've always excelled in English class since I was a child as I've always been an avid reader and a talented and knowledgeable writer. I have a B.A. in English from St. John's University. I've read extensively in literature and poetry in the Western Tradition from Antiquity to Postmodern including in large part English and American Literature, Greek, Italian, and German literature in translation, and some Eastern literature as well. I am astute in technicalities of literary terms, grammar, etc.

I'm a kind, easy going, patient, and compassionate guy always willing to help any students maximize their potential in these fields I am also so passionate about. Thank you!

I am glad I found Stephen

My son needed help in his English class. They are reading "Macbeth". After his first meeting with Stephen, he told me he made it more interesting to read Shakespeare now. What a difference. Thanks Stephen.
