About Angela

Hello everyone!

I'm a 27 year old Korean-American female currently working on a two year school counseling master's degree at Hunter College. Because of my schooling and internship experience in counseling, I have a great passion to educate students academically, but also to aid students to develop socioemotionally. My philosophy also includes guiding students to reach their fullest potential.

Since my years in high school, I have volunteered at different organizations as a teacher, and have held teaching jobs at various summer and after schools. I have privately tutored students as young as 4 years old to college aged students.

I believe in equity for all, and am especially attentive to students with special needs. I strive to bring my counselor training into all tutor sessions. My tutoring sessions are driven towards academic improvement, but also socioemotional development wherein I can supplement our lessons with guided workshops and activities that are tailored to each individual student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have been teaching algebra 1 and 2 in summer school programs, after schools, and my personal student for the past three years or so. I always prepare ahead so that the lesson for a particular session is fresh in my memory and so I could develop ways to teach mathematical concepts most effectively for students to comprehend fully.

Algebra 2

I have been teaching algebra 1 and 2 in summer school programs, after schools, and my personal student for the past three years or so. I always prepare ahead so that the lesson for a particular session is fresh in my memory and so I could develop ways to teach mathematical concepts most effectively for students to comprehend fully.

Bible Studies

I was born into a Christian family, and have attended church for the past 27 years. I have volunteered as a Sunday School Bible Study teacher for the past 6 years. Furthermore, in my seven summers of experience as a teacher at my church summer school, I have prepared for and taught a weekly Bible Study class as part of the academic schedule.

Elementary (K-6th)

This summer, I will be the director at a summer school program. I have developed an academic curriculum, weekly schedules, and guidance workshops for students in Pre-K to 8th grade. I also have 7 summers of experience as a summer school teacher. I taught English, math, SHSAT, and Bible study. Furthermore, I worked with elementary to middle school students for over five years at two different after schools.

English

In teaching students essay/paper writing, I guide students to incorporate different short stories, novels, current events, history, and life experiences so the student can write high quality comparative, analytic, and creative pieces. At the same time, I make sure that the student uses correct grammar and punctuation in his/her writing. I especially enjoy revising essays, and guiding students to create their own writing styles. Furthermore, I challenge students to think critically when choosing the sources for their paper.

Korean

I am a Korean American. I am able to fluently speak, write, read, and understand the Korean language.

Microsoft Excel

I took a computer course in college wherein I learned how to use Microsoft Excel beyond the beginner level. I have been using it regularly since I was in college to organize data, create schedules, manage finances, etc.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I took a computer course in college wherein I learned how to use Microsoft PowerPoint more effectively. I have been using it for almost 10 years now to create presentations that are well organized, visually and/or audibly appealing, and effective in getting points across.

Public Speaking

I took an oral communications class in college as a part of my business minor. I use the skills from that class in my role as a teacher at church, as the director of an upcoming summer program, and in my master's program in school counseling. All of my graduate classes require oral presentations, and I am always confident because I know how to prepare and also have developed the skills to deliver speeches/presentations effectively.

SAT Writing

I have the combined writing experience from four years at Stuyvesant High School, four years of college, and one year of graduate school. Due to my fields of study, I have always had to turn in papers regularly. I have received countless stellar grades on papers, as writing is a personal strong point.

SSAT

I studied very hard to take the SSAT and was admitted to Stuyvesant High School in 2007. Over the years, I have taught SSAT to many students who hope to attend a specialized high school.

Study Skills

I studied the SHSAT for two months prior to taking the test. In that time, I developed a way to effectively learn the material without expanding all my energy on the one book that I had. I was accepted to Stuyvesant High School, which was my goal when I picked up the SHSAT prep book.

Furthermore, over my education career, I developed the essential study skills to graduate cum laude in a college honors program while working two part time jobs.

I have taught study skills in all my 10+ years privately tutoring, and as a teacher at a summer school and after schools. I teach students how to focus on the task by getting rid of distractions. I also teach students how to effectively take notes, underline, or highlight important information so that it is easier to study the material. I especially enjoy creating flash cards or colorful outlines of important concepts or words so that students can get the added benefit of visual stimulation that helps them remember the material better.

I also encourage students to find their own way of organizing their workload (planner, to-do list, chart, etc.) so they can manage their time wisely, and learn to prioritize their responsibilities.

There are many study skills one can use to improve grades or work efficiency, and I will work with each student to find the set of skills that work best for him/her. Over time, these skills will become habitual and be of valuable use in everyday life.

Writing

I enjoy writing, and love guiding students to develop better writing skills. I not only pay close attention to punctuation and grammar, but also give insight into different sources that a student could use to strengthen a writing piece. My goal in teaching writing is helping students write a cohesive and well thought out essay that is written in their own personal style.
