Elementary Education

Common Core,

Common Core

I have taught Common Core ELA and math test prep in summer schools, after schools, and as a private tutor. I am able to assist students in completing assignments from the Common Core curriculum, and also in preparing for the tests by incorporating appropriate study skills and habits.
Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

In the summer of 2016, I acted as the director at a summer school program. I developed an academic curriculum, weekly schedules, and guidance workshops for students in Pre-K to 8th grade. I also have seven summers of experience as a summer school teacher and two as an assistant teacher wherein I taught English, math, and SHSAT. Over the years, I have privately tutored students ranging from 4 years old to college students, as well. Furthermore, I worked with elementary to middle school students for over five years at a few different after schools.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I studied the SHSAT for two months prior to taking the test. In that time, I developed a way to effectively learn the material without expanding all my energy on the one book that I had. I was accepted to Stuyvesant High School, which was my goal when I picked up the SHSAT prep book. Furthermore, over my education career, I developed the essential study skills to graduate cum laude in a college honors program while working two part time jobs. I have taught study skills in all my 10+ years privately tutoring, and as a teacher at a summer school and after schools. I teach students how to focus on the task by getting rid of distractions. I also teach students how to effectively take notes, underline, or highlight important information so that it is easier to study the material. I especially enjoy creating flash cards or colorful outlines of important concepts or words so that students can get the added benefit of visual stimulation that helps them remember the material better. I also encourage students to find their own way of organizing their workload (planner, to-do list, chart, etc.) so they can manage their time wisely, and learn to prioritize their responsibilities. There are many study skills one can use to improve grades or work efficiency, and I will work with each student to find the set of skills that work best for him/her. Over time, these skills will become habitual and be of valuable use in everyday life.

In teaching students essay/paper writing, I guide students to incorporate different short stories, novels, current events, history, and life experiences so the student can write high quality comparative, analytic, and creative pieces. At the same time, I make sure that the student uses correct grammar and punctuation in his/her writing. I especially enjoy revising essays, and guiding students to create their own writing styles. Furthermore, I challenge students to think critically when choosing the sources for their paper.

SAT Writing

I have the combined writing experience from four years at Stuyvesant High School, four years of college, and two years of graduate school. Due to my fields of study, I have always had to turn in papers regularly. I have received countless stellar grades on papers, as writing is a personal strong point.

I enjoy writing, and love guiding students to develop better writing skills. I not only pay close attention to punctuation and grammar, but also give insight into different sources that a student could use to strengthen a writing piece. My goal in teaching writing is helping students write a cohesive and well thought out essay that is written in their own personal style.
