About Chris

As a current undergrad student aiming for a Bachelors/Masters with two Associates and several certifications under my belt, I understand the pressures of keeping up with course loads. With my extensive personal skills on the language as a bilingual deaf adult, I am offering my services to assist students interested in the American Sign Language (ASL). My services are also offered to non-students who are interested in the language.

Also, I am offering my services to parents of/and deaf or hard-of-hearing students at any grade level *regardless of subject* who would like assistance with studying, homework, etc, with the use of Sign Language. I understand that parents have busy schedules or sometimes feel assisting with the schoolwork in sign language is awkward. I also understand that sometimes language barriers can also make situations similarly awkward with study partners and deaf/HOH individuals.

Although I do not have an official teaching certificate, I had the pleasurable experience of a two-week Sign Language "summer camp" with the Wappingers School District one summer and my students (aged from 7-13) initially were reluctant to attend daily, but ended up enjoying the lessons that they had personally asked me to return the following year. From that experience, I learned that it is important to adjust our teaching methods to fit the students' needs and to hold their interest. I have also held private lessons with several adults, both in a group setting and individually.

My tutoring methods will vary from each student, to match their needs. Homework assistance and studying are naturally included in sessions, as well as additional learning to advance oneself in the material(s). Classroom materials, external published materials, and the Internet may be used. Activities may also be improvised, like once I had the children play the card game "Go Fish" with focus on learning the correct numerical hand shapes and comprehending brief signed dialogue.

All in all, I strive to keep my sessions interesting, beneficial, and educational! Plus, there's nothing like the experience of working alongside an inspirational bilingual and deaf individual!

Group tutoring may be arranged.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Hard Of Hearing

I have voluntarily taught in group and individual private settings with adults, as well as in a classroom setting with children as a paid "camp" instructor. I am personally deaf and bilingual in ASL and English.
