About Lynda

I am a passionate, accomplished and dedicated educator with intensive training and experience, and am responsible for significant gains in literacy as a result of skillful teaching. I am skilled at identifying special needs of students, diagnosing and remediating reading difficulties, and applying multi-modal instruction for learning disabled students. In the past I have worked as a Direct Instruction Teacher at a Colorado Reading First school in Colorado Springs.

My specialty is the use of Direct Instruction to raise reading achievement for students who are struggling in reading. These students have moved to higher levels of achievement, have become excited about school, have improved self-image, have gained motivation to learn, begun to create their own future, and have achieved success in learning.

Although I am flexible about scheduling students, I ask you to contact me 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel a lesson. A free consultation will be provided before tutoring begins. I have a private and comfortable place in my home where I work with my students. I look forward to the opportunity to help your son or daughter become a successful reader.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

Over the course of my teaching I have worked successfully with ADD/ADHD students for over two years. I seat these students where I have physical proximity to redirect. I also provide them with frequent breaks during the lesson. I also use a visual schedule when needed to help them stay organized. Really wiggly students sit on an exercise ball throughout the lesson.

Bible Studies

I have been leading a small group Bible study for about six months. I have many years of attending Bible studies. I read my Bible daily and know the Bible very well. I have committed many Bible verses to memory. I have had Bible studies with my children over the years.

Dyslexia

I use a multi-sensory approach when working with children with dyslexia. I have them do Brain Gyms also. I use Dibels testing to identify students at risk for dyslexia. I help the child develop phonemic awareness, and then build skills in phonics. In any series of reading lessons that I teach, I always include a spelling component, which is essential for this type of learner. Additionally, my phonics instruction is explicit and systematic. Also I assess the student to see if he is learning what I am teaching.

Elementary (K-6th)

I started my career as a 3rd grade teacher, then moved to teaching 5th grade. Later in my career I became a certified teacher of moderate disabilities for K-9, and grades 3-12. I have nearly 20 years of teaching experience at this time. I can teach beginning reading and math along with reading, writing, and math for grades 2, 3, 4, and 5. I am also a trained direct instruction reading and math teacher.

Elementary Math

I have many successful years of working with students to improve performance in math. I have worked with grade levels K-6 with excellent results.

Prealgebra

I worked in middle school classrooms with many different curriculums and materials. I also re-wrote whole lessons in Everyday Math. I love pre-algebra.

Reading

I am a trained Literacy Coach, experience with Horizons Fast Track A/B and C/D, Reading Mastery, Corrective Reading Decoding, Corrective Comprehension

Special Needs

I am a licensed Special Needs Teacher for levels K-12. I was a Resource Room Teacher in the public schools of Chelsea, MA, and also a Special Education Teacher at the elementary and middle school levels in the public schools of Colorado Springs. I use Zig Engelmann's Direct Instruction when I am teaching reading. Students that I have had were students with expressive/receptive speech disabilities, nonverbal learning disabilities, students with Dyslexia, ADD, and students on the Spectrum, to name some. I also have letters of reference about my work.

Study Skills

I have been teaching study skills to students for several years now as part of the work of a Special Education Teacher. Some of the specific skills that I teach are 1) how to take notes, 2) how to organize notes for test preparation, 3) preparing to read and study in the content areas such as science and social studies, 4) how to organize a binder effectively, 5) use of KWL chart to help improve subject area comprehension. I also show students how to categorize things by color coding.
