About Rachel

My love of children has spurred on a wonderful, lifelong career of helping children learn. As a NYS Certified Special Educator for Elementary and Junior High grades, I've had the opportunity to teach children with learning disabilities and behavioral challenges for over 4 years. My experiences teaching exceptional learners has taught me the value of high expectations and constructive feedback and made me superior in differentiated instruction and social skills modeling. My students respond well to the dedication and enthusiasm I project into my lessons; they know I will never give up until I find the best way for them to learn!

I have experience teaching all elementary subjects but I specialize in teaching reading/writing to struggling readers as well as beginner and advanced Hebrew studies. Additionally, as a current Junior High classroom teacher, I excel at showing students how to improve their organizational and study skills. No matter what the subject or lesson goals, I consistently focus on helping my students take charge of their own learning and reward themselves for their success. I've truly appreciated and learned from every child and every family I have worked with; I cannot imagine having any other job!

Parental involvement can have a strong, positive influence on a child's achievements. For that reason, I invite parents to join my tutoring sessions, update them on their child's progress and request feedback on my performance. For your comfort and convenience, all tutoring sessions take place in the child's home or preferred location and may be cancelled or rescheduled up to 6 hours hours before a session.

I look forward to seeing the sparkle in your child's eye as he/she enjoys the feeling of getting it right! Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. Good Luck!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

As an experienced classroom teacher, with a Master's degree in Special Education, I've had the opportunity to teach students with various different disabilities, including ADHD, for over 3 years. I've found that students with ADHD were capable learners who required unique and individual modifications to succeed. I've successfully used multi-sensory instruction (including audio/kinesthetic modalities), built-in breaks, step-by-step instruction, preferential seating and extra wait time when asking questions.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

As an experienced classroom teacher, with a Master's degree in Special Education, and as a volunteer for Ohel Family Services, I've had the opportunity to interact with children with various different disabilities, including Autism. My experience with Autism has taught me the effectiveness of visual/graphic organizers, consistent structure and routine, concise verbal cues, extra wait and testing time, checks for understanding and social skills modeling for children with autism.

Dyslexia

As an experienced classroom teacher, with a Master's degree in Special Education, I've had the opportunity to teach students with various different disabilities, including Dyslexia, for over 3 years. In my classroom, I've successfully used repetition of instruction, fill-in notes, consistent structure and routine, step-by-step instruction, concise verbal cues, checks for understanding and alternative response modes (such as verbal testing instead of written) to help students succeed.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a NYS certified Special Education teacher (Grades 1-6), I've had the opportunity to teach various different grades, including grades 1-2 and 4-7. Additionally, I've worked as a SETSS Provider in the 2nd grade and am familiar with many areas of Elementary Instruction, including decoding skills, reading comprehension, telling time and counting money, problem solving, writing skills and handwriting.

Handwriting

As an experienced classroom teacher, I've had the opportunity to teach students with various different learning disabilities, for over 3 years. Many of my students struggled with illegible handwriting and I've successfully used several methods, such as increased response time, partially filled-in outlines, highlighted lines on sheet, abbreviations, graph paper and the use of a "scribe" to help improve their written work.

Hebrew

As a Junior High classroom teacher for 2 years, I've taught Hebrew Studies (including Jewish Bible, Hebrew Language, Jewish Law and Religion and Jewish History) to a class of students with learning disabilities, with a strong emphasis on teaching Hebrew reading, writing and reading comprehension . My strong Jewish background, extensive Hebrew education and fluency in the Hebrew language make me a superior candidate to teach both beginner and advanced Hebrew studies.

Phonics

As a NYS certified Special Education teacher (Grades 1-6), I've had the opportunity to teach various different grades, including grades 1-2 and have focused extensively on teaching phonics to beginning readers. Additionally, I've worked as a SETSS Provider in the 2nd and 3rd grade and am familiar with teaching many aspects of phonics, including consonant and vowel digraphs blends, CVCC and CCVC words and decoding multi-syllabic words.

Special Needs

As an experienced classroom teacher and SETSS Provider, with a Master's degree in Special Education, I've had the opportunity to teach students with various different disabilities, including ADHD, Asperger's, learning disabilities, speech/language impairments, Dyslexia, and emotional disturbance for over 3 years. In my classroom, I've successfully used a variety of modifications, such as multi-sensory learning, partially filled-in outlines, consistent structure and routine, step-by-step instruction, graphic/visual organizers, concise verbal cues, checks for understanding, extra wait time, modified text and sheets and alternative response modes to help students with special needs succeed.

Study Skills

As a Junior High Classroom teacher for adolescents with learning disabilities, I've focused extensively on teaching good study skills to help my students take charge of their own learning. My lessons have included tips and techniques on finding a good place and time to study, note-taking skills, good studying habits in school and at home, managing stress, short-term planning and organizational skill instruction.
