About Liz

As an academic librarian, I teach students how to use the library for research, as well as helping them with their writing. Research, reading, and writing go hand-in-hand to produce work that is not just good, but great. Helping students improve their writing means they won't just get better grades, but will have more success in the future. The ability to express oneself well is an important skill that often gets neglected in the rush of homework and standardized tests.

When I'm not teaching or doing reference work I like to research and write on a range of topics, both in my professional work and as a hobby. I publish articles within my profession, and also write a regular blog discussing literature. I credit my writing abilities to an interest in how language works and a regular reading habit.

Whether it's proof-reading and working on grammar, or honing voice and expression, I can help students improve their reading comprehension and writing by focusing on the fundamentals of language and good examples of writing within the specified discipline. With dual Master's degrees in Library Science and English, I have many years' experience reading, writing, and editing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Having completed both undergraduate and graduate degrees in English Literature, I have a firm foundation of seminal works in English, especially those commonly read and discussed in high school and undergraduate classrooms. I can help students learn how to read better, and to write more effective essays about topics in English Literature. In teaching English, I would approach any work by placing it within its context--historical and literary movement--and by breaking it down into meaningful parts which can be analyzed and discussed at the level of the particular student I am tutoring.

GRE

I've passed the GRE within the last six years and completed a graduate degree in English Literature. I've also taken math courses up to and including college-level calculus, and have tutored in writing and reading comprehension.
