My tutoring experience really began with my younger brother who is 9 years younger than me. He often struggled with math and writing, and when I was home we would discuss where he was stuck and I'd work to find ways to explain to him how to apply the techniques to find the answers or write a strong essay.
Since then I've tutored professionally in NYC, primarily in poorer areas where English was a second language to most of my students. We focused on English arts, primarily writing and reading, but that led to vocabulary, grammar, history, etc. I taught children elementary age through high school.
At Doodlebugs Children's Center I was the lead after school teacher, and the most important part of my job was helping children with homework. This was elementary level, but the challenges are the same, trying to find a common ground of understanding rather than just drilling information.
I also am a gifted musician and singer. I am a great fit for students who need to supplement their schooling in a casual setting that will lay the foundation for test prep and searching for colleges. $65 for two hour sessions. May request an increase in the rate depending on location or behavioral challenges.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
