This is my 18th year teaching English at the high school level. The past 2 years my students have done extremely well on the Common Core ELA Regents exam. I have experience teaching grades 9 - 12. In my classroom students learn Common Core skills as well as reading comprehension and writing strategies. I received my Secondary Education - English degree from Canisius College and my Master's degree in Reading from the State University of New York at Cortland. I love working with students in a one-on-one setting, either in person or via the internet, because it allows me to customize my teaching to help individual students succeed. I have 3 children of my own and they each learn differently. My son is extremely auditory while my daughter and other son are very visual. Watching them gives me insight into how to best help the students in my classroom. I am always doing research on new teaching strategies, especially how to use technology, to generate success for my students. I am a passionate reader and I love sharing my passion with my students.
With a Master's degree in reading I am able to teach reading comprehension strategies to help my students fully comprehend what they are reading. In my high school classroom I have my students grouped by reading level and I have guided reading lessons every day with each group at their reading level. I am always conferencing with my students about their writing, how to use the skills I have taught them and how to improve the development of their ideas.
I am well versed in the Common Core skills required to be college and career ready. Through constant collaboration with my department, my lessons are based around the skills each students will need to master to be successful, not only on the regents exam, but also in college and or their career. My students know how to create a claim, support that claim using evidence from the text, and develop their ideas by analyzing their thoughts. They also know how to glean the central idea of a text and write about how authors use writing strategies to develop that central idea.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Our school has given the Common Core ELA Regents for the past 2 years. I am very familiar with the reading comprehension, argumentative and text-based response sections of this exam. My students perform very well on this exam. I am also very familiar with both rubrics used to grade the writing pieces of this exam. I have graded this exam a number of times, June 2014, January 2015, June 2015 and January 2016. My students know how to create a claim, support their claim with evidence from various texts, distinguish their claim from alternate claims and analyze their ideas. They also know how to write about the central idea of a text and explain how the author uses writing strategies or rhetorical devices to develop their central idea.
