About Peter

I have a doctorate in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering and have taught college classes (both 4-year and community college). Furthermore, I tutored: (1) As an undergraduate-student at I.I.T. in Chicago, IL, (2) While working a a chemical engineer at Fluor Corp. in Irvine, CA, (3) as a graduate student at U. of CA., Irvine. Also, I mentored an 11-year-old youth in Boston, MA., whose primary need was to get outside and "have fun". And that is my goal: "To convince younger people that applying themselves, by learning, can be fun".

I have completed core mathematics requirements for engineering, as well as additional course-work and have completed the core course-work towards an M. Ed. at Cambridge College (Cambridge, MA.), although I was unable to complete the pre-practicum, observation requirements.

I worked as a research scientist at IITRI (Chicago, IL., 1982-1988) for more than 5 years, as a chemical engineer at Fluor Corp. (Irvine, CA., 1988-2007) for nearly 20 years, and as a graduate student, research scientist and lecturer at the University of California, Irvine, CA. (1988 - 2008). So, I have extensive knowledge in Science, Mathematics and their application to "real-world" problems.

Thus, I can work with people and help them understand basic skills which are needed to compete in today's highly technological job market. I have a very flexible schedule.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I believe that I am qualified to tutor Algebra 2, based upon my education and experience. My education includes: completing most of the required courses for an M.Ed.-Mathematics at Cambridge College ( Cambridge, MA. (1/2012 - 8/2013), GPA.: 4.0/4.0. I was unable to complete pre-practicum observation, because I need to move to New York State in 2013, due to the death of my Step-father in 2013.), receipt of an M.S. (6/1996) and Ph.D. (12/2001) in Chemical & Biochem. Eng. at the University of California (Irvine, CA. (1/1988 to 12/2001), GPA: 3.9/4.0, where I also taught several college level engineering courses), and receipt of a B.S. in Chemical Engineering (12/1982) at Illinois Institute of Technology (Chicago, IL. (8/1977 to 12/1982), GPA: 3.2/4.0).

For brevity, I have not mentioned additional experience (For example, in tutoring math as a graduate student at Illinois Institute of Technology).
Since I have advanced degrees, teaching experience, and tutoring experience. I believe that I am qualified to tutor Algebra 2.

Biochemistry

Chemistry Qualifications:
-University of California, Irvine: MS & PhD. in Biochemical Engineering. Also worked as lecturer & research scientist:
Taught undergraduate college courses (sophomore to senior level) in Chemical, Biochemical & Material science (CBEMS) & Biomedical Eng. (BME), including: BME 110B (Biomechanics II, junior level, Winter 2008), BME 150 (Bio Mass Transfer, junior level, Spring 2007), CBEMS 40A (Process Eng. Calculations, sophomore level, Fall 2002, Summer 2003, Summer 2005, Summer 2006 & Summer 2007), & CBEMS 135 (Chemical Process Control, senior level, Fall, 2006). Modeled human subject research in physiology.
-IIT Research Institute, Chicago, IL. : Performed laboratory experiments and chemical analysis, for research projects.

Calculus

I believe that I am qualified to tutor calculus, based upon my education and experience. My education includes: completing most of the required courses toward an M.Ed.-Mathematics at Cambridge College ( Cambridge, MA., 1/2012 - 8/2013, G.P.A.: 4.0/4.0). At Cambridge College, I completed both Calculus I & Calculus II. The purpose of these two classes was both to demonstrate proficiency in calculus and to understand methods to teach calculus to an individual that has no background in this subject.

Furthermore, I developed mathematical models for chemical and bio-chemical processes, based upon the application of calculus, at both I.I.T. Research Institute (Chicago, IL., 8/1982 to 12/1987) and at the University of California (Irvine, CA.,12/2001 to 6/2008). Also, at the University of California, Irvine, I taught several undergraduate engineering classes, which required the application of calculus to engineering problems.

I believe that my advanced degrees, additional education, teaching experience and work experience makes me qualified to tutor calculus.

Chemical Engineering

My education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, awarded from the Illinois Institute of Technology (Chicago, IL). And I received my Master's & Ph.D. degrees in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering awarded from the University of California, Irvine (in 1996 and 2001, respectively).

Furthermore, I taught college classes at the University of California, Irvine (sophomore to senior level) in Chemical, Biochemical & Material science (CBEMS) & Biomedical Eng. (BME), including: BME 110B (Biomechanics II, junior level, Winter 2008), BME 150 (Bio Mass Transfer, junior level, Spring 2007), CBEMS 40A (Process Eng. Calculations, sophomore level, Fall 2002, Summer 2003, Summer 2005, Summer 2006 & Summer 2007), & CBEMS 135 (Chemical Process Control, senior level, Fall, 2006).

Since I have taught college level classes in Chemical Engineering, I believe that I am qualified.

Chemistry

subject qualifications in Chemistry:
-University of California, Irvine: MS & PhD. in Chem & Biochem Eng.
(Taught college courses in Chemical, Biochem. & Biomedical Eng.)
-IIT Research Institute, Chicago, IL. : Performed laboratory & pilot-scale experiments, including chemical analysis, for research projects.

Differential Equations

My education:
(1) BS., Chem. Eng. (IL. Inst. Tech., Chicago, IL., 1982)
(2) Univ. of CA., Irvine, CA. (1988 to 2001),
MS. (1996) & PhD. (2001) in Chem. & Biochem. Eng.
(3) University of Illinois, Chicago, IL. (1986 to 1987),
Completed ten courses in Electrical Engineering.
(4) Cambridge College, Cambridge, MA. (2012 -2013),
Completed required courses for M.Ed.-Mathematics.
has required extensive exposure to calculus, and therefore exposure to methods for solution of differential equations (both analytic & numerical).

I also have utilized solutions to differential equations as proposed solutions to "real-world" problems at :
University of California, Irvine, CA. and I.I.T. Research Institute, Chicago, IL.

Physics

I have a BS in Chemical Engineering and a Doctorate in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering. Furthermore, I worked on numerous projects (both at Illinois Inst. of Tech. Res. Inst. (Chicago, IL.) and at Fluor Corp. (Irvine, CA.), which required extensive knowledge of Physics. Finally, I completed several courses in Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois, Chicago, IL. (between 6/1986 &12/1987), which further extended my practical knowledge of Physics .

Statistics

I have extensive academic studies in statistics, most recently at Cambridge College (Cambridge, MA., August, 2013). Also, I have applied statistics to both chemical and biochemical engineering problems. I have at least one publication, in biochemical engineering, where statistics played an important role in the analysis. Based upon these experiences, I believe that I am qualified to tutor statistics.

Trigonometry

As an M.Ed.-Mathematics student at Cambridge College (Cambridge, MA., 1/2012 - 8/2013, grade point avg.: 4.0/4.0), I completed most of the required courses teaching high school mathematics. At the University of Illinois, Chicago, IL (6/1986 to 12/1987, grade point avg.: 5.0/5.0), I completed ten courses in Electrical engineering. Electrical engineering requires fundamental understanding of trigonometry (For example application of Fourier Transform techniques). Later, at the University of California, Irvine, CA (1/1988 to 12/2001), where I received an M.S. (6/1996) and Ph.D. (12/2001) in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering, I applied mathematical analysis methods to engineering problems, which required the use of analysis, more advanced than simple Fourier Transforms. I have at least 2 publications, and perhaps 1 patent, which are related to this work.
Fundamental understanding of trigonometry is an asset, but I believe that my "life experiences" have taught me both a fundamental understanding of trigonometry and its application to "real-world problems".
