I have worked in the education field, as a special education and reading teacher, since 1998. My approach is student centered. I design tutoring sessions to focus on the learning style of the students, to encourage students to challenge themselves and to work beyond their zone of development. All students can learn; the key is the approach taken to learn the required material. Students need to learn at their own pace and within their learning style. My job is to develop lessons that are engaging, interactive, and on the students' learning level. My goal is to expand students' knowledge base, to encourage a desire in students to become life-long learners and to increase students' independence, self-reliance and motivation. I will help people of any age to improve their skills in the desired subject area.

Amy is always prepared for her tutoring meeting with my daughter. She is very patient and she brings tools with her that enable my daughter to love Math.
Our daughter has ADHD and can be distracted pretty easily. She also strongly dislikes/is afraid of school work. Amy is able to make the work more enjoyable for her and can keep her focused on the task at hand. Amy has incredible patience as well. We are starting to see our daughter not be afraid of approaching her school work, and she is starting to be more confident in her academic abilities, even only after two sessions with Amy.
Keep up the good work, Amy! Thanks!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Currently I am substitute teaching for Owego-Apalachin and Maine-Endwell school districts, and from September to December of 2014, I worked as a supervisor/lead teacher for the YMCA's after school program located at Thomas J Watson Elementary School. During my time in the after school program I helped the elementary students (second through fifth grade ) with their math work everyday, and in my position as a substitute teacher, I keep current with the common core curriculum being taught in the local elementary schools.
My Bachelor of Science degree is in Special Education: Kindergarten through Twelfth grade. I have 15 years of teaching experience mainly in the Special Education setting. Working with students with a variety of ability levels, I have developed a tool bag of methods for acquiring and retaining information. My greatest asset is my belief that all students can learn and achieve success given the time to learn at their own pace, and provided with instruction at their level as well as within their learning style.
As a Special Education teacher (10.5 years), I taught a support lab for students with learning challenges. In that support lab, I focused on teaching students how to study for tests/quizzes using a variety of methods:
Examples of methods taught (including but not limited to):
-Break notes apart: create questions from notes to answer using information provided in the notes (simulate a test situation); write each question on one side of an index card (can use lined paper to create index cards) then write the answer on the other side.
-Create mnemonic devices to make connections with the material to be learned with familiar information.
-Design a visual graphic to show how the material to be learned is connected.
-Reviewing notes nightly (15 minutes per subject).
