About Everett

Computers are here to stay. They are the future and my passion. I have spent my life learning the ins and outs of the computer, from bit level control and circuitry, to file I/O, and through programming and networking. I have always been fascinated with how the computer functions and what I can make it do to make my life and the lives of others better. That being said, there is an age old adage that says "you do not truly know a subject until you teach it." It is my goal to share what I have learned with others, in a manner which nurtures and encourages the same level of love for the computer that I have.

I have a BS in Computer science from Hartwick College. I specialize in programming and logic, through the use of pseudo-code and flow chart diagrams to begin with, and leading to the syntax and nuances of the chosen language. My preferred languages are Lua, C#, and Java however, I am proficient in all the C languages, Ruby, Python, and A.S.M. I am capable with others. I also teach SQL, HTML, and JavaScript. My major goal is to keep the student challenged and entertained, through life applicable programming challenges and homework assignments, without overwhelming the student.

To hold myself to an appropriate standard, I require periodic feedback from the student and the parent, if applicable. I refuse to charge for any lesson which is deemed unsatisfactory to either the student, parent or myself. I conduct my sessions in several ways, ranging from the local public library, to private in-home sessions, as well as occasional online sessions. However, to my current students, I am available for questions 24 hours a day through E-mail at no cost.

It is my joy and my honor to help you learn the science of tomorrow and I look forward to meeting you as you continue your journey of discovery!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C

I was first introduced to the C language in late 2000 and have used the language extensively over the last fourteen years. I have a BS in Computer science from Hartwick College. I am A+, Network+ and Security+ Certified. I am a member in good standing of Phi Theta Kappa national honors society and have tutored for every school I have attended.

C#

C# and Java are what I consider to be my "go to" languages. They are what I use on nearly a daily basis and have for the last five years. I have a BS in Computer science from Hartwick College plus over 20 years of self taught experience in programming. I am a member in good standing of Phi Theta Kappa national honors society and have tutored for every school I have attended.

C++

C++ was not my first language, but it is a language that I use on a regular basis. I have used C++ since early 2001 and have grown to appreciate over the years. Computer Programming

Programming is my bread and butter, it is what I do for fun and what I do to relax. I get a thrill from the exercise my mind gets from solving a problem that requires abstract thought and an in-depth understanding of the material. I have a BS in Computer science from Hartwick College plus over 20 years of self taught experience.

DOS

My very first computer was a DOS system and since that day I have loved the command line interfaces. I still prefer the command style Linux platforms over the GUI centric systems such as Windows or Mac. I have a BS in Computer science from Hartwick College I am A+, Network+ and Security+ Certified. I am a member in good standing of Phi Theta Kappa national honors society and have tutored for every school I have attended.

General Computer

HTML

HTML is a mainstay in my programming world. It is often a method I use to teach the fundamentals of syntax to middle and high school students who wish to learn programming. I am current with HTML 5 and CSS 3. I have a BS in Computer science from Hartwick College. My own personal machine is a Linux machine so I am quite familiar with the nuances and oddities. From Red Hat to Backtrack and from desk tops to the Raspberry Pi, Linux is my OS of choice. Microsoft Excel

BS in Computer science from Hartwick College (contact professors Howard Lichtman or Robert Gann for references) plus over 20 years of self taught experience.

Microsoft Word

Every student from kindergarten through doctoral candidates is by necessity familiar with the concept of a word processor. One of my first jobs was teaching retirees to use Microsoft Word. Having survived that I am quite capable of tutoring others who are learning to use Microsoft Word. I have a BS in Computer science from Hartwick College. I am A+, Network+ and Security+ Certified. I am a member in good standing of Phi Theta Kappa national honors society and have tutored for every school I have attended.

Networking (Computer)

SQL

Though SQL is not my favorite topic it is an extremely important one. SQL is a routine part of my programming and some form of database operations is a requirement for most of my professional contracts.

Visual Basic

Basic was the first language I learned while Visual Basic was the second language I ever learned. My dad began teaching me Visual Basic back around 1985 or '86. Basic remains a favorite of mine despite its tendency to create spaghetti code and it continues to spawn new versions such as Small Basic. I have a BS in Computer science from Hartwick College plus over 20 years of self taught experience. I am a member in good standing of Phi Theta Kappa national honors society and have tutored for every school I have attended.

Web Design

I learned the principles of web design at the same time I began learning HTML. I believe that knowing WHAT to put on a web page is just as important as HOW to put it there. Because of this, I began studying the art of web presence design. I have a BS in Computer Science from Hartwick College.
