I am a foreign student from Hong Kong who is looking for a tutor job to make a living. Back to the days in my hometown Hong Kong, I was an interpreter translating English to Chinese. My major at my high school in Hong Kong was Chinese History, which gave me a fully understanding of Chinese culture and its difference with the western culture. I am now a teaching assistant in teaching ESL in Literacy level. My students are mostly Chinese, and I use my bilingual skills to make my teaching more effective.

Reason for not teaching simplified chinese:

Source from Prof. Wan Chin

The simplified characters were created by the communist government of the People’s Republic of China in the 1950s by means of compulsory measures through legislation, media control and publication laws. The simplification derives from popular short-hands, synonyms and official designs by government linguists. You can imagine if your government released linguistic laws one day suddenly and the English spelling for key, quay, kea, cay and kee had to be written all in the form “ki” and this were taught in the school and printed in newspapers. Key, quay, kea, cay were not allowed to appear in public space and were taken as historical spelling.

Simplified Chinese characters were created largely without regard to the communicative rationality and structural aesthetics of traditional orthdox characters used since the Han dynasty (206-220 BC) and thus regarded by the learned Chinese people as a short-hand with little culture and grace. Most linguists not resident in the PRC will consider the simplified Chinese characters as a political means to cut off the link of Chinese people with their dynastic past as traditional history and literature printed in simplified Chinese are confusing, if not undecipherable. Please think if the English students read Shakespeare when the drama scripts were spelt with “color”, “thru” and “ki” (for key, key, quay etc.)
