About Kyle

I am a West Point graduate who has been to thirteen countries and traveled through most of the US. In those travels I have experienced a great deal of life, and worked alongside many people in all walks of life. I have studied and learned a wide variety of topics to one degree or another, and am actively learning and continuing my education, and expect to do so throughout my life. I received a cum laude title on the college-level national latin exam in eighth grade; I have had a college-level reading ability since sixth grade. After college I received a score of 141 on the Defense Language Aptitude Battery, a standardized test designed to estimate ability to learn a new language; a 105 is considered sufficient to learn the hardest languages on Earth.

More importantly for this tutoring question, I have learned to work with, uplift, and maximize the efforts and potential of myself and those around me, a skill that pays dividends when helping others help themselves. I have tutored informally for years, many ages and many subjects. Age, disposition, culture, even language skills are of little concern as long as you actively want to learn and progress. I have always relied on my ability to bridge the gap between myself and the student, finding ways to help them understand the material their way. This has garnered great success in High School, College, in the workforce, and in South Korea and other countries I have tutored in. At this point in my life I would like to get back to helping others in that way, so here I am! Please feel free to contact me if you think I can meet your needs.

I am relatively flexible with my schedule, and generally willing to reach some sort of accord if it becomes necessary; I want to help! If you are looking for someone to help with entry-level understanding, process memorization, or higher-level conceptual building, maybe I'm someone who can help you. Please send me a message and we'll see what I can do for you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I addition to having tutored ESL in other countries, to children and adults, I speak Spanish at a high level, and have some small experience with Russian, German, and Japanese.

Geometry

Math in general has always been a specialty of mine; Geometry in particular I took in ninth grade and got a High A. As with most math-based classes, understanding the logic and the process has always been essential to me in succeeding, and passing that on to others has always garnered positive results.

Microsoft Outlook

I have been working regularly with Microsoft Outlook since 2005. I have worked with nearly every function, from calendar merging and PST creation to contact syncing and more. In my work experience I have been required to help colleagues with one issue or another related to Outlook on at least a weekly basis, and have always been able to help resolve their issue. My methods generally involve walking through the process, detailing the logic of the process, and having them complete an example unaided but supervised; though obviously the most useful methods adapt to the student.

Public Speaking

I have classroom and real-world experience in public speaking, from small groups to large organizations, and from general topics given in a public forum to specific topics addressing a group of experts. I have tutored on this in the past in various fashions, usually relating to mentality, body language, combining different aspects into a cohesive message, and more. The use of certain methods, such as memorization versus flow and targeting versus generalizing, depends largely on the student's requirements and the general intent of the public speaking event intended.

Study Skills

I attended private schools from first through eighth grade. While in middle school, I learned via the Thayer method, whereby a student does homework and studying Before coming to class, at which point the teacher corrects and supplements their knowledge. I graduated from West Point, which required significant time and effort investment, in addition to efficient and thorough studying methods and routines.

General highlights I learned and practiced, and can impart to others, include time management and task prioritization techniques, physical and mental organization methods, and the ability to discern and use critical data (for example, in word problems).

He started with pronunciation and worked towards action verbs and numbers and some barn words. Everyone liked "school". Looking forward to next week. No more to add for the first lesson!
