About Eric

To get the most enjoyment out of music, a certain level of commitment and personal discipline (practicing!) is necessary. A great benefit of pursuing music lessons is the opportunity it gives us to notice and eventually improve our work ethic in general. Some of my students have been awarded exemplary soloist awards at solo and ensemble and some have gone on to major in music at a university, but I hope that all of them will at the very least appreciate and enjoy music for the rest of their lives. The biggest reason people come to me for lessons is that their school band can't give them the individual instruction and help that they need. This is why I always encourage my students to ask me questions anytime and many of them email me questions every week. I love teaching all ages and abilities.

I want us to have a great time learning music together. I absolutely love music AND teaching. I will give you 110%, because I love doing it. I will do anything and everything I can to help you succeed. We will work toward your goals – whether that is to get into a professional orchestra, play in a local community or dance band, or just learn how to make music for your own enjoyment and therapy. My students know they can ask me questions about lessons anytime (and they DO!). I am here for you. I love getting questions from my students and I am excited to help you learn and grow through music.

If you need to change a lesson time or cancel that is absolutely no problem; I would appreciate a notice at least 24 hours in advance, and more notice is appreciated so that I can fill your slot with another student. I realize that people get sick, just please let me know as soon as possible. It is very discouraging when a student cancels five minutes before their lesson, please don’t be that student. I put a lot of time into preparing for your lessons every week. Many music stores and private teachers charge for your lesson if you cancel or are sick! If you give a sufficient notice I will always reschedule your lesson free of charge for you.

There will be some responsibility to find sheet music and method books to purchase new or used. The Petrucci Music Library is an online database of much of the music that has gone public domain and is totally free. If cost is an issue, please let me know and we can specifically choose materials to work on that are public domain (available freely). There is a LOT. I will say, it is nicer to have the published editions. If you need help finding music, ask me. There is also the cost of finding an instrument (if applicable) and maintaining it. If/when your instrument needs repair work, I can advise you to the right repair technician; there are many, and some aren’t as good as others!

Please contact me with any questions or concerns, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Clarinet

Eric is a student of the famous clarinetist and conductor Alan Kay (Orpheus Chamber Ensemble, Julliard, Manhattan School of Music). In May of 2015, Eric completed his Master of Music degree in clarinet performance as a School of Music Fellow, studying with Alexander Fiterstein at the University of Minnesota. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree summa cum laude from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire studying clarinet performance and pedagogy with Dr. Melissa Koprowski.

Ear Training

Eric teaches and performs regularly in the Long Island area, and currently resides in Stony Brook, NY. He is a doctoral student at Stony Brook University and serves as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Music History and Theory, including Ear Training.

Flute

Eric studied flute performance with Dr. Tim Lane (Former Cleveland Orchestra).

Saxophone

Eric studied classical saxophone performance with Dr. Nancy MacMillan and extended techniques and contemporary saxophone repertoire with Dr. Douglass O'Connor. The emphasis of his undergraduate career was jazz saxophone performance and improvisation and Eric likes to teach this as well, if the student is interested.
