My name is Patty and I am a 20 year veteran special education teacher. I have experience with all grade levels and disabilities. I have experience with developmentally delayed, Asperger Syndrome, Autism, learning disabilities and emotional problems. I teach High School Regents courses such as the living environment. I have also taught Regents level English, social studies and study skills.
My philosophy includes setting up student organization and strategy. If a student can develop skills on how to answer step one then the other steps can logically follow. I develop a knowledge base of basic information that the student can generalize into any topic, not just the one being tutored at the time. I identify positive behaviors that will lead to success and better self-esteem. I let the student know it is a risk to learn and through positive interaction they will feel more confident to take a risk and attempt the tasks that may be giving the problem or lack of understanding.
I know everyone's time is valuable and I stick to a routine that will develop success and a plan for the future. Students develop a sense of accomplishment by using better strategies for learning.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
