I am graduate student studying Childhood Education at, Long Island University. I have earned a B.A in English with a minor in Psychology. I have many goals in life and one of them is to become an Elementary school teacher. After receiving my Bachelor's degree, I decided to attend Graduate School within the same school to pursue my Master's in Childhood Education. My passion to work with kids goes beyond anything else I enjoy in life. I see myself as a model for today's children and would love to be the one who help them out in many struggles relating to school subjects.
Relating to tutoring, I have always loved being around students. Education is really important to me as well as helping students succeed, so I feel that when certain students are having trouble with certain subjects, we need to find a way in helping them to improve. I have a couple of examples in which I have worked around children and lesson plans I have creating during my Teaching and Learning classes.
In one case, during my freshmen year in college, I had an internship in Manhattan where I tutored Elementary school kids. I loved it. Children seem to interact with me and understand how much I wanted them to do better. My second example would be during my third year in high school. I had to do 72 hours of community service. So, I decided to do them in the elementary school I graduated from in 2000. I was so happy, I have no words to describe how I was feeling. I was an after school assistant where I helped 4th and 5th graders with their homework. When the students did not understand something, I would break down the problem, or reading, and explain it to them thoroughly.
I am very close to children and I am positive that once I give them my attention and full support, little by little they will start to do better. I want to be that person who listens to them and knows how to take care of the situation in order to make them better at what they are currently struggling in. All students need someone who can be by their side and see them as a friend who only wants the best for them. Tutors and teachers can make this happen and I'd love to be one of them one day.
Also, I would like to take full advantage of my English bachelor's. I have become a great writer since my undergrad years and have written great papers based on my Childhood Education and English courses. I hope one day to get the privilege to work or be an intern in such company like the publishing and editing industry while being a teacher as well. Anything is possible if we set our minds to it! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have had many experiences with elementary students throughout my school years. My first experience with students was in my third year in high school. I did community service in Public School 172 where I tutored students from grades 1 to 4 in their Math, English and science courses. My second experience was when I first came in to Long Island University. I did an internship at Jewish Child Care Association, which was a tutoring company for all students from grades K-8. I prepared lesson plans to meet the need of students with diverse learning styles and also created reading lessons for students in order to strengthen their reading comprehension and writing skills.
My first job was within the University called, JumpStart. In this job, I was part of the AmeriCorps group which entitled me to work with children from the ages of 4-6. I was able to teach children how to read and count. I also corrected their homework and met with the child's to discuss their progress. I love seeing children learning how to read in such a small age. It inspires me to continue helping students because I am sure that one day I will be thankful for having to be part of the reason that they have gotten better.
I have also seen myself help kids outside of school or work. I am capable of helping out my little cousins in all subjects to help them improve their grades in school not because they asked me too, but because I want to. With the experiences that I have had with children in the past years, it has only made my passion for helping kids stronger each and every day.
