About Sarah

I am experienced at teaching and tutoring over 200 students in the biology field, including ecology, zoology, biostats, etc. I have my Bachelor's degree in biology with a specialization in ecology and conservation and my Master's degree in Biology.

During my undergraduate and graduate career, I have taught 3 biology courses and tutored for another biology course. With this experience, I am confident in my ability to help students understand science topics that were originally confusing or foreign to them.

Although most of my experience is teaching college students, I am available to help any student (elementary through college).

Biology courses I have taken: Biology 1, Biology 2, Ecology, Genetics, Neuroscience, Evolution, Conservation Biology, Vertebrate Zoology, Forest Ecology, Behavioral Ecology, Biology of Global Change, Animal Behavior, Animal Communication, Symbiosis, Host-Parasite Associations, Natural Disasters

Biostatistics courses I have taken: Experimental Design and ANOVA (using SPSS software), Biometry (using R software)

Biology courses I have taught/tutored: Biological Concepts Lab: Evolution, Diversity, & Ecology (100-level), Evolution (400-level), Vertebrate Zoology (400-level)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biostatistics

During my graduate career, I took two biostatistics courses. In one course (Experimental Design and ANOVA), I learned how to analyze data using SPSS software. In the second course (Biometry), I learned how to analyze data using R software. Both courses provided me with knowledge and experience on many different analyses used for biological studies, such as t-tests, ANOVAs, linear regressions, and many non-parametric analyses.

Genetics

I took a Genetics class at my undergraduate. During this course, I became familiar with many topics, such as Mendal's laws, cytogenetics, human pedigrees, central dogma, mutation, gene expression, and methods in recombinant DNA technology. I also formed and led a study group for this course, in which I helped my peers understand topics that were confusing to them.
During my graduate career, I was a tutor for BIOL120 (Cells, Metabolism, Genetics).

Zoology

During my undergraduate and graduate careers, I took courses in Vertebrate Zoology, Animal Behavior, Animal Communication, and Behavioral Ecology. These courses have provided me with extensive knowledge on Zoology. In addition, I was a undergraduate TA for Vertebrate Zoology and was a graduate TA for BIOL123 (Evolution, Diversity, Ecology) where I was able to teach students about zoology. Lastly, I used my knowledge of zoology during Master's thesis research, in which I studied the habituation process of African elephants.
